MCV is reporting that both Warner Bros. and Square Enix preparing bids to take over Eidos. Other reports concerning Ubisoft and EA showing interest have also surfaced, but the Warner and Square bids sound much more serious.
Apparently Square Enix has even been checking in on Eidos' assets, including a visit to IO Interactive from Yoichi Wada. Square's been making noise recently about wanting to be more relevant to the Western markets. I'm not really sure that picking up the company that does Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Age of Conan is the best way to accomplish that task, but hey, I guess I'd rather play any one of those games than the last few Final Fantasy games, so maybe they're onto something.
Warner Bros., however, already owns 20 percent of Eidos, giving them a leg up on everyone else. MCV estimates that Warner would need to spend another $80 million to totally control Eidos.
Still, it'd be interesting to watch Square Enix influence the next batch of Eidos releases. Would Agent 47 be painted as a more reluctant hero who kills all his foes with an oversized sword in Hitman X-2? Will Kane be able to summon an Esper form of Lynch to breathe unholy fire over all of their foes for 9999 damage apiece in Kane and Lynch II? Will whoever steps in and takes over finally put out a new Fear Effect game?
