Mature MMO
Please read g0rd0nfr33m4n’s review for a more detailed one. I want to chime in with another good score for the game.
I played a trial an unknown number of years ago and was not patient enough. I played another trial the winter of 2011 and logged 30 hours in 14 days. I had matured, although I wasn’t ready to subscribe to an MMO yet. I had single player games I wanted to complete. I waited another year. I played EVE Online for a few months last winter and racked up 251 hours according to Steam.
I estimate about 20% of my play time was with a couple friends I knew in person that were also new to the game. The rest was either solo or with a corp. Player interaction is what makes EVE Online, even if you’re the type to fly solo. The high level of patience the game requires weeds out impatient players. The result is a community of mature pilots. Some may be scoundrels, but they’re not ten years old. This was refreshing! I developed a relationship to some degree with my corp mates. I suppose you could say it was akin to a co-worker relationship. We counted on each other to play certain roles. Saying, “I will do this,” was meaningful. Our word was trusted. That interaction is what kept me tied to play for hours and hours. I had my personal goals, of course, but those were like side missions in my mind; it was much more fulfilling to be part of a larger unit, part of something you can’t accomplish on your own.
