Garfield Lynns began his career as a pyrotechnics specialist in the Gotham film industry. Following an economic downturn, Lynns lost his job and turned to a life of petty crime. Maintaining a fascination with fire, Lynns became an amateur arsonist, but was caught by Batman and Robin after his first attempted robbery.

Lynns becomes obsessed with pyromania and constructs a high-tech suit based on the ecology of a firefly. Lynns turns to arson full-time and becomes a student of super-villain Killer Moth. However, their partnership ends after Moth fears for his owns safety from the increasingly unhinged Firefly.

Lynns is eventually sent to Arkham Asylum, but quickly escapes. During an attempt to burn down a chemical plant, he is caught in an explosion and horribly burned over 90% of his body. Lynns is arrested and sent to Blackgate Prison.
