Best year of this Generation

I was going back listening to old bombcasts and the 2008 Game of the Year discussion reminded me that wow, that was a heck of a list Burnout Paradise, Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gears of War 2, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Dead Space, Braid, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, and Fable II. There isn't a game on this list I dont look back at and think "Damn, i really liked that game"

But looking at this got me thinking, what do you think is the best year for games of the past generation of consoles?

Tied between 2009 and 2010 for me.

2009:

2010

2009 wins for bringing in the quantity (a fair amount of my all-time top ten favourite games of the generation are in there), but 2010 has RDR, so... still a tough choice. If RDR was a 2009 release (and was still the same game of course) then it would take it without a doubt in my mind.

EDIT: OK... I think 2009 would probably take it after looking over those picks some more.

1885 was a pretty good year, that was when Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux developed a vaccine to rabies, which previous to that point had been 100% fatal in all human cases.

I would just like to use this thread to remind everyone that video games are the best.

I would have to say 2007. Objectively speaking, 2007 brought a boatload of awesome new IPs as well as several long awaited sequels like Halo 3 and God of War II.

I partial to 2011.

2008, as it was the year Giantbomb was officially born. As for the games, I'm getting too old to remember these days.

2010:

Nier, Metro 2033, Alpha Protocol, Resonance of Fate, Fallout: New Vegas, Stalker: Call of Pripyat

2008: Fallout 3, MGS 4, GTA IV, Braid, Persona 4, and Rock Band 2.

I'm going with 2007 not only because the games that year were fun, but 2007 is a landmark year for this gaming generation. The year had so many games that would start current trends in gaming and/or create new franchises that could define this generation of gaming. Games include:

• COD Modern Warfare
• Uncharted
• Rock Band
• The Orange Box (which includes Team Fortress 2 and Portal)

'07. One of the best years in any generation, I think.

I didn't play a lot of games when they came out, but 2009 was probably the height of my time spent gaming so I'll go with that. Between Skate 2, inFamous, nearly 1,000 online games of NBA 2K9/2K10 and taking taxi rides in Liberty City so I could load and smoke a bowl, gaming was everything right in my life that year.

This generation was the first where I had actual responsibilities like bills and buying my own food, so I wasn't able to keep up year to year like I was in previous generations. It's all a blur to me as a result.

2013 probably comes in close second thanks to Playstation Plus allowing me to play all sorts of games I thought I would NEVER get to play, from Street Fighter IV to XCOM.

Gotta go with 2010. Fallout: New Vegas, BioShock 2, No More Heroes 2, Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, Alpha Protocol, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Limbo, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and of course Deadly Premontions. What a seaso- uh, year!

Every year more or less have a strong set of games that are great for a while and then are quickly replaced by newer shinier games. For me it comes down to how good the top 3-4 games of the year are and how long they remain meaningful and influencial.

In that regard 2013 has the potential to be it for me and it's all riding on GTA V's shoulders. If it's as great as it looks and if Watch Dogs also delivers then 2013 will tough to beat.

At the moment i don't think there's any other years that can stand to 2007 this gen. Most of the great (and in many cases better) games of subsequent years are all sequels to franchise being established in 2007 in the first place. Portal, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Bioshock, TF2, HL2: Episode Two (Which is the best HL2 content for me) and of course the juggernaut that is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

2009 sucked. I remember not having any games to buy. Hell 2009 made uncharted look good. Uncharted sucks.

Yep. Definitely the year of the generation. I remember during 2011 everybody was complaining that too many games were coming out and they couldn't afford them all. Plus, it had GoTY winner Saints Row the Third.

Can't really say, but I will say ps2 generation was the best for me. Since I've played such an asowme amount of epic memorable games.

2011 was a really strong year in my opinion, but, we had some pretty good years earlier this gen too, 2006 (Oblivion, Battlefield 2, Hitman: Blood Money, Chromehounds, Prey, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Dead Rising, Just Cause, Rainbow Six Vegas) and 2007 (Crysis, Shadowrun, The Darkness, Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, Super Mario Galaxy) come to mind.

Definitely 2007 for me. Massively influential, and Crackdown. The most pure fun you can have.

For me? The last time a worthwhile game was launched (GTA IV 2008).

2007 Holiday Season rocked my little world

Mass Effect, Halo 3, MW1, RockBand, BioShock, and probably something else I forgot.

Again, this comes down to if you qualify it as "most influential" or "best executed".

Personally I think 2010 might've been the year I was most enamored with the "new" consoles, but it was probably mostly due to a combination of being a late investor and games starting to re-iterate on the new ideas. Although, at the same time, if I were to make a list of my favorite games of this generation I don't think 2010 would be that well represented.

It has to be 2010 for me. With 2011 coming a close second
