Have you ever considered giving up gaming for a month? This question was raised, the weekend passed when my friends spent the weekend away from our consoles, and decided to go out in the snow.
January is a quite time for releases and I would be interested if there are any gamer like myself who would consider attempting this.
Give up gaming during January...?

But my playing hasn't ever impaired my ability to do anything in life....so no, the thought never crossed my mind... sure there are weeks when I don't turn the console on or start up a game on my PC, but that's because I have shit to do or I'm busy. I'm not willfully combating an addiction.
"moderation"...sounds like you could use a good dose of it.
I think the only way I could see myself doing that is if I found one day that video games were no longer giving me any entertainment value whatsoever, or my work load from university was so much I had no free time at all. That hasn't happened yet and I think it's unlikely too in the near future.

I thought about it then I remembered the stack of 20 unfinished games I bought this year and that thought went straight out the window.
Actually, I've been doing this for the last 3 years. Sometimes I just get sick of controllers and patch notes and take a month break and do something else. Last time I did this I think it was August or September. It's my favorite hobby, I'm fortunate enough to have free time and money for gaming but an occasional change of pace can be pleasant.
January used to be a quiet month for games, not any more. There's quite a few high profile releases in January. LittleBigPlanet 2 and Dead Space 2 spring to mind straight away.
In my case its quite the opposite. In January is when there's less things to do outside and it's when I have more time to play the games I haven't played before. And with things like Steam holidays sales I reach January with quite a lot of games to play. Maybe a little too much.
Months like July and August are the ones that I can spend a lot of time without playing vidgames.
I once tried to stop playing on my PC (As well as my PSP) and see how long I'd last but I only lasted a week. I couldn't help but double click the Battlefield 1942 icon on my desktop.
So, hell no, I'm not giving up gaming for a month.
I've never done it on purpose, but I've gone for 6 weeks this year without picking up a controller or logging on to Steam. I just didn't feel like gaming. That mood passed and now I am playing again once every few days which is normal for me. In the past I've gone for months without gaming, so it's no big deal. I am more than just a gamer.
The only gaming I've done in the last 5 days was about 45 min. of bowling with my niece on the Wii so I'm just about ready to kill some one. So one month? No thanks
I'm not saying that video games are the ONLY thing in life, I'm just saying that it's the most important thing ;)
" I got a shitload of 2010 games still left to play, so I can't take a break just yet. "Same here.
Well considering games are my escape from a stressful ass job, uh...no I can't do that. Gaming's entertainment and a coping mechanism in my case. Much better for me than the other options I guess. Also, maybe in summer I could do that with so much more shit to do outside...January is a month to hide from the weather anyway. Good luck w/that though.
I could give up gaming for a month, but I would NOT do it during January, there are a ton of games that I haven't had time to play and January's a slow month with little to do, and the weather here in Sweden is ice cold right now, like -17 C, and I would want to avoid going outside as much as I can
Don't get me wrong, I love snow, skiing and such but it's so cold out there that my body hurts if I stay outside for a lengthy time, and I don't even live up north
I'd give it up during summer maybe

^(That's) What she said.
I've barely touched my 360 in the past month due to work + my TV breaking. I went out and bought myself an HD monitor for Christmas and have only tested Mass Effect 2 on it for less than an hour, so I personally can't wait for January to roll around so I have more free time to play some games. I have been playing a good bit of WoW since the expansion hit, but it's much easier to multi-task during that time since I'm not raiding or pvping yet.
Do what you have to do, though, OP. Gaming should be a fun part of life, and it shouldn't weigh it down so much that you feel you need to step away - though I can see that happening.
Why? It's less about the all-or-nothing that people seem to be embracing these days and more about moderation (the more difficult choice).
" Wouldn't Lent be more appropriate if someone were gonna do this? :P "I was just thinking that lol, me and my friend had a bet once to see if would could give up our 360's for a month. He lasted all of 2 days when Halo Reach came out, he told me "our bet was stupid" I just smiled lol
