Hi all, hope your all doing well, despite this lull in releases. I spent most of yesterday playing Marvel Vs Capcom 2 after all this talk of a new version on the way...Anyway;

Can you think of any music / music videos other than those below that you think have been inspired by videogames in some way?

I used to listen to a lot of dance music here in the UK while growing up, Hardcore and Jungle mainly. Back then I remember a lot of those underground tracks would use samples from video games and movies, with little concern of ownership rights. Today I found one of those early tracks, one which must be 20 years old now *darn*,  a track that was inspired by the classic shmup R Type. (uploaded below)

Finding the track prompted me to scour around and see what other music / music videos that have been inspired by videogames.  I came up with the following, but I reckon there must be many more, which is why I am hoping some of you can shed some light on a few others.

No Caption Provided

Jo - "R Type" (PUSH A TO PAUSE)

I am actually currently making my own music of the sort, using my DSi & Korg DS-10, while FruityLoops to bring the sonic awesomeness together. I will be sure to post my tracks in this thread when I am done.

Here's the few that I found:

Candence Weapon - "Sharks"

(Donkey Kong, Frogger, Rampage, and more)

Junior Senior - "Move Your Feet"

(Atari 2600)

Xiu Xiu - "Boy Soprano"

(The Legend of Kage)

Top Gear SNES - seems to have inspired Muse's - "Bliss"

Muse - "Bliss"

Architecture in Helsinki - "Do The Whirlwind"

The same Aussie dude made that awesome video art project ^

It's Friday tomorrow, make sure have a good one whatever you end up doing. [LS]

It wasn't necessarily inspired by gaming music, but TokyoChicken linked me to this site about a month back that put all these rap songs together with a bunch of Zelda songs. It's a pretty cool thing, and it's called The Ocarina of Rhyme.

Sure, it's the other way around, but the shop theme in Zelda OoT sounds like Let It Roll by BTO.

It doesn't have a video and none of the actual music sounds all videogame-y, but Deftones have an instrumental on Saturday Night Wrist called 'U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, A, B, Select, Start'.

@ Vichenzo

Sweet post!, just the type of thing I was looking for.

I should really ask my brother to ask his Japanese friends also.

Your right, it does a little. I've never realized that before or seen anyone remark upon it, despite being a huge Zelda fan. Perhaps Koji Kondo is a fan, he does listen to all types of music to inspire his work.

This thing happens a lot in Nintendo games, sometimes to cost of games never getting released here :/   *Mother- fuckers*

@ Zell

Thanks, downloading that now.

EDIT: Love the Great Fairy Fountain track!

I'm sure Hadouken use Gameboy sound samples in some of their songs. They got their name from the move in Street Fighter as well.

There's also Girl by Beck, that has a bit at the beginning that sounds similar to the music found on an 8-Bit console.

I'm not sure if it's directly inspired by a piece of video game music, but fingerstyle guitarist Andy McKee composed a piece called Samus' Stardrive which is inspired by the protagonist of the Metroid games. McKee confesses himself to be a bit of a video game nut in the album's liner notes.

Here's one I've found on YouTube. It's a remix version of Necro & Twelve's theme - from Street Fighter III - and one of Jay-Z songs.

Where did you buy the hoodie from, and what does it look like?.   I would definitely get one if it looked cool.

You should check out Anamanaguchi, you'd fall in love with it instantly. It's basically a combination of live instruments (2 guitars, bass and drums) and 8-bit sampling, heavily inspired in composition by the NES action games. It always makes me think of Mega Man on steroids. Seriously some of the best 8-bit shit out there. Hit me up with a PM if you want me to hook you up with some tracks.

ALL of the stuff available by subatomicglue.  I think all of it is free off of their website.

"Final Level" by Duke Dumont is also extremely awesome and definitely influenced by retro video games.

Superfluid's version of Knucklebusters is pretty ace. It's a breaky rendition of the classic Rob Hubbard tune, but it also incorporates the speech elements of Impossible Mission.

Oh, and the bit in the breakdown where it says "cut number one contains computer data..."? It's taken from a hidden thing you can hear when you stick your Playstation disc of Castlevania SotN into a CD player. It's one of my all-time favourite gaming easter eggs from one of my all-time favourite games!

Go HERE to listen to Knucklebusters - you need to drag the bottom octogon onto the player, then click on the tune in the menu.
