" Can we at least receive a Whiskey Media Staff Calender then? "or even better..
Whiskey Media Staff Calender with the staff members drawn as anime chicks
So no one else is worried that the addition unannounced benefits of premium membership could include exclusive or early-access audio or video content? I know the GB guys are smart, but they have businessmen they need to answer to who might have a desire to play hardball since, if you read the Whiskey Media main site, video content is apparently the biggest attraction. Ahh, maybe i'm just crazy.
Another idea, although maybe not just for paid subscribers, would be a series of tutorial videos/posts by the GB staff on various important games to help people get good at them. For example, Brad could give a course on Starcraft II; or Jeff could show how to train for Streetfighter 4, and Vinny could explain how to play Persona 4. Of course, the staff-members themselves would have to get good at the games first (zing!). But seriously, I'm sure they are much better than me and to get good at some of these games requires a lot of time and attention. There is no other group of guys that I would want to spend that kind time with than those here on GB. Even if there were more tools for community members to post instructional-videos or walkthrough videos would be cool.
Yes, I'm asking for this because I suck at games. :-P
Question here, Dave. I'd be very happy if I got this answered.
The idea about a shirt is great, I absolutely love it. But would it mean that the subscription is $10 more expensive for everyone outside the US? Would there be an option to not get the shirt and pay the normal cost for it? It just seems rather.. uncool that just because some people do not live in the US, we get charged a higher price for a subscription that other people get cheaper.
Also imagine this, somewhere down the line, you end up with multiple shirt designs in your store. Would the subscriber be able to pick which of the shirts he wanted.
And if someone decided to subscribe for a year, and then do the same the next year. Would they get another shirt then or is it just a one-time thing?
" @ch13696 said:Yeah I know. I paid for this app back in March. I'm all for supporting the staff and the site, but come to find out that the app is free? C'mon." What about the people that already paid $2 for the iPhone app that you rarely even talk about? Are you going to ditch them? "I'd forgotten that I'd paid for that :D "
Would it be possible to get a button on our achievements page to refresh our accounts? It's not a big deal, and I'm assuming you'd still have to limit its use to once every few hours to prevent abuse, but it'd be handy. I've definitely finished playing a game, especially when I get an S-rank, and been bummed out when waiting anywhere between a few hours and many days to see how I've done compared to the rest of the community.
BTW, I commonly donate $5/month to podcasts I like (that will take my money). So, $60/year is fine with me, although I realize others might not have that kinda cash to throw around. (Okay, okay, I'll stop bragging :-). Maybe it could be tiered pricing. Or a flat-rate for subscription and allow people to optionally donate more if they would like to do that.
" I am really not a fan of a paid membership... No matter what you get, why can't just everyone get it? "I understand when it's something like 720p videos. The current site video quality is just fine. 720p uses more bandwidth, which they have to pay for. It's premium quality for a premium price, but no one is losing out on video content as a result.
gotta say
1 i think the video quality is fine at the moment I don't really need slightly better resoultion
2 don't have an iphone or a good enough phone to enjoy the app
3 i'm in the uk and haven't seen any adds yet
I would pay for some more audio and video content though
stuff like button mashing BRING IT BACK!!! - call it button smashing to avoid controversy
I have no problems with the plans so far, but it doesn't seem tempting as far as exclusive content / features (to be clear, I'm saying this so they can maybe augment it).
The thing that really comes to mind that would be cool to me is to offer fairly expensive subs / one time fee but you get sent some cool physical thing. I'm not sure what that thing would be, but some physical memento would be cool.
I am pretty much willing to fork over a reasonable yearly fee to make sure this site gets my support. I know it's tough to decide which features to make available only to the tea-sipping elite, but I like Snide's outline, so I trust his judgment.
One thing I will say is that although some have said they don't want any paid features that make the subscribers "stand out", I think that there have to be some fancy way to tell subscribers on the forums, as an incentive to others. As long as they aren't too garish, some kind of subscriber tag or title is a good subtle "advertisement" to the non-subscribers of the paid service. Honestly, if those tags would make you mad, then just fork out some money for the site you go to all the time (at least I do).
My suggestion for additional content is to do something like Chris Onstad with his fanflow on Achewood... kind of extra behind-the-scenes video and more special features only available to subscribers (at least for a month or so). I know you guys are already doing a lot of video work, but if my money could go toward more video content I would be extra psyched.
Thanks for all your hard work! (By the way, Snide, you should have been running the QL on RUSE, Ryan didn't do the best job)
A fucking calendar would be amazing!
Suggestive poses please and all naked (semi naked at least). Locations including: car wash, farm with someone straddling a bale of hay, rose petal bed, server room, beach/sea etc etc. It'd be cheap to make and cheaper to mail to places.
I'm pretty sure I paid $2 for that iPhone app =)Our iPhone app from last year is still free.
Perhaps some sort of humorous gold badge could be displayed under your user picture in forum posts and on your profile page? Something to distinguish paying users from free users should be apart of this.
Maybe you could just sell the videos individually like iTunes or just start selling mad merchandise. I'm not going to pay a yearly thing for videos unless its just crazy shit that makes no sense. That being said, if this is what it takes I'll try and support you guys.
I don't use paypal - but I think you will find a lot of people don't like giving their credit/debit cards to websites - even 100% legit ones like Whiskey. Also some foreign cards charge a lot more commission to pay in dollars than paypal does.
It sucks that a portion of the income will be skimmed by paypal (not that credit card merchant accounts are free) but I think you would lose more in lost business.

Quite a few PMs there, Dave.
Anyways, the paid stuff sounds good. Nothing mind-blowing but still nice perks. Videos look great, by the way.
All I want to know is the pricing.
Also, you guys definitely should support PayPal.

" Please, don't make me pay for quests. That would be ridiculously cheap, and yes, I realize the irony in wording it like that. "
" It doesn't sound like it's enough. i feel like a dirt bag for criticizing without coming up with a creative solution, but paid web services are always weird. I would want specific features, not just minor upgrades to what i get for free. I would like a GiantBomb shirt that's not black and it would have to involve Lincoln and Luchdeer in some way. Perhaps throw a Tank in there? "So don't sign up for premium. You will not be missing out on much and the ads you view will be supporting the site. It will no doubt evolve over time if it proves popular but this seams less of a pay-wall and more of letting people support the site and giving them a little something back so it isn't just a donation.
I'd most definitely pay for a yearly subscription on the promise of at least 1 Endurance Run a year. Everything else is just gravy for me.(no ads, hd video etc.).
As for that T-Shirt:
Black
Front: Ask me anything about this shirt
Back: Giant Bomb logo (maybe not too big and at the top?)
" I'd love a t-shirt.. maybe a different color for my name (Where it says: "Post by: TurboMan") ... I want that Gold for some reason. "I'm down for a different color for names. It's something relatively minor, but still, it's nice.

" Paypal please! Not many people in the EU have creditcards, like, practically none! This could work, I sure hope it does as you guys deserve it! "Exaggerate much? Maybe not in eastern europe - although one fucker has 'cause they cloned my card a few years back :D
Would it be possible to sign up for a year and not have to pay for extra shipping on a shirt? I will happily play my yearly fee but that $10 extra for people outside the US seems to steep for myself.
I will happily put my money down for this. Giant Bomb (and other Whiskey Media sites) have given me hours upon hours of free content over the last 2 and a half years. I will gladly pay and little fee once a year to keep Ryan Davis happy.
On the topic of more stuff with the fee, a little icon on the forum would be nice. There isn't too much else I can come up with at the top of my head.
I'm really liking the idea of different colors and symbols next to the username for premium users. Maybe even a larger icon too.
It doesn't disrupt the forums and it pops out like a status symbol should. Keep it VIP for the ones that go the extra mile.
Also: Rare quests achievement icons under the user icon.
" Perhaps some sort of humorous gold badge could be displayed under your user picture in forum posts and on your profile page? Something to distinguish paying users from free users should be apart of this. "Should be fairly discrete and optional. Then you get three classes of people. The normals, the ones with a cool badge because they became paid members and the ultra-cool who paid but don't want the badge. Like the ultra rich who dress like tramps just because they can.
