Poll Pick your poison: Alcohol or Video games, you can only pick one and the other will be forever unavailable to you. (857 votes)
Choose wisely.
Choose wisely.
I drink less as I get older and the hangovers get worse, but video games keep hanging in there as my main hobby. The choice was easier than I thought it would be.
If they take away booze then I will have to take up new drugs. I don't really fancy weed. Legalise LSD or heroin please.
...
On the other hand, I'm down to 3-4 light beers in an evening. I know it isn't meeting the condition, but these days it keeps me out of trouble.
Never had a drop of alcohol in my life. Lot of alcoholics in my family line, all fucked up their lives in one way or another. Fuck alcohol.
I'm lying in bed right now, feeling not exactly peachy after drinking 4 glasses of wine earlier, my first alcohol in a while. Video games, please.
As I scroll through this thread at a random bar drinking a tall beer at the end of a long Work day, I realize this question is easier for some.
I could give up alcohol for video games I guess.
I cannot handle alcohol well, in that I always drink way too much and it only makes me more depressed. It's a terrible way of self-medicating and I would personally be better off without it. So video games.
Easy, I couldn't care less about alcohol.
I'll keep my games, thanks.
Sums up my feelings on the subject pretty well.
I've never had alcohol.
Literally it's either a drink or countless works of art. Who the fuck would pick alcohol? the hell is wrong with you
I'll just say this: I'm turning 28 pretty soon. I haven't had my first beer until I was 24, and I haven't had a beer since I was 24.
If either is removed from the entire world (i.e nobody can have the one I choose to give up), I'd give up alcohol. It wouldn't be my choice, but better for the world.
I know this isn't the question, so...
If it's just from my life, I choose to lose video games. Movies and music are more important to me and I gotta have my drinks. I watch more GB than I play games anyway. This was my poll choice.
I’m a bartender, and drink daily in one form or another, and though I do enjoy playing video games and they are a formative bit of my being, I also think my life has always been better when I’ve been unable to find a new game to play and had to do something else with my time. With a gun to my head I’d easily drop video games, especially since this question is worded in such a way that I could still have myself a cocktail and watch Giant Bomb if I’d like, and that’s how I consume most of my video games anyway.
I thought I played more games than I had in years this year, and that was somewhat true. But it turned out I just played more of the sports games I buy than I have in years. I still struggled to write in 6 votes for my reader GotY votes. Oh well.
This is a very difficult choice... perhaps one of the hardest I've ever had put in front of me. I enjoy the act of playing video games more, but... Ultimately, I think video games have had a greater negative impact on my lifestyle than alcohol has, so I think I'd cut games?
Lots of types of biases going on in this thread, hehe.
I just want to say the same things as almost everyone here has. Give me the games or give me the death!
@nodima: I feel ya, its simply a matter of how you approach gaming and/or alcohol, regardless of them existing. I can imagine being in the same shoes as you are though.
However, right now I haven't drunk anything so I pick video games over alcohol, regardless of the positive atmosphere it can create.
Alcohol leads to me leaving my house and socializing with real people as apposed to video games which are a very solitary activity so I chose that.
Alcohol is overrated.
Video games are overrated.
Long Version:
I had a pretty terrible back injury about 12 years ago where doctors were throwing pills at me like candy (oxcodone, muscle relaxers, anti-inflamitories). I'd mow my law wearing a brace with an ice cold bottle of vodka down the back (numb my pain topically and via digestion). Anyhow...I drank a lot to avoid needing the oxycodone, enough hard alcohol would take the edge off enough to get by...AND I come from a family with significant alcohol abuse issues.
Anyhow, after two years of medicine striking out, I didn't want to live with that much pain anymore, AND my wife was talking about having kids. I had some alternative medicine suggested to me, and after about 9 months it was miraculous. I still hurt every day and need to manage my pain (it's just a matter of learning from mistakes). Working out is difficult, as my back gets in the way and sidelines me from time to time, but is worth keeping up with.
Short Version:
I'll drink socially, but booze hasn't been a part of my life for a decade.
@mattgiersoni: I rarely drink these days, but the right whiskey is fantastic. I've always enjoyed a little rum, too...
I've never had alcohol (I really have no interest in the stuff), but I can't recall a week going by in my whole life where I haven't played some video game.
Alcohol is overrated.
Video games are overrated.
Both of these are true.
The amount of lives that have been taken due to alcohol should be enough evidence that not only should alcohol be illegal, but it should have never been broadcasted into the mainstream. I've found in my years of drinking that most people who drink have some deeper problem that they are either unable to address themselves, or are unaware they have a problem and drink to "quench" their thirst. I've had a lot of positive experiences due to alcohol, but they were only positive because people associate alcohol with "loosening up".
Video Games for life.
The amount of lives that have been taken due to alcohol should be enough evidence that not only should alcohol be illegal, but it should have never been broadcasted into the mainstream.
Well it worked out so well during Prohibition, we should give it a try again!
