Take a look at this
Johnny5 posted this on the GB mIRC ... its from 4chan.
Interesting point, and i agree with it. all the new protagonists have the same bald & metallic look and postures... thats the new cool, and its sickening. I feel i should blame Gears of War the most.
discuss (:
Good, i wont those squares to speak out so i can ignore them. anybody who only cares about the source and doesnt look through the content should be ignored" Accurate, but because you said 4chan, people will dismiss it because hating 4chan is cool. "

" @Ahmad_Metallic: No that's actually John McClain, that picture is taken from Die Hard 4. "hmm. yeah good call, i only looked a quick look and read the title which is wrong
Dude, Gears of war? Really? You have quite obviously forgotten about the O G himself:"

He's been killin Aliens since Marcus and Dom were consummating their friendship in the the boys shower room in high school.
Maybe most of the people who work in the games industry are bald are inspired by what they know. I blame the two petes... Peter Moore and Peter Molyneux.
(bald guys)took us to a whole new level of that hard look.. and influenced the games that came afterwards
Plus, Duke had hair... BLONDE hair
It's a coping mechanism. Most game designers are male, and gaming has been around a long time now. So long that all those young designers are now becoming middle-aged and starting to lose their hair. They've cleverly used gaming as a platform for the "Bald is Badass" campaign, so now whenever they bare their heads in public, instead of hearing "Ha,ha! Get a combover, old dude!" they hear "FUCKYEAHSPACEMARINEWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
Super-realistic hair (like you see in CG cutscenes and Pixar films) is hard to render in real time since it relies on dynamics. As of now most games just use a shitton of polygons with alpha channels on them to give the appearance of hair. Since the quality of the hair rarely matches that of the rest of the model most art teams decide to go for a shorter/bald look.

Wait, didn't we all figure this out around the launch of the PS3, when everybody was complaining about the color brown? But yea, character variety has dribbled in past years; we've gone from the wide range of samey animal characters, to the slightly less wide range of samey anime characters, to the narrow range of FPS characters.
" This is kind of getting old, but at the same time, bald guys are total badasses. "No bald guys are weird, Shaved heads are badass.
Its the new look of gaming. The man with the plan has a bald head. And even still, its just not in gaming, look at the outside world....bald is the new look now. I went to wal-mart and seen at over 70 people with bald heads.
Lol, Mario stays awesome

Interesting, it does seem that that design is used often, maybe people think it makes them look tough or something... I don't know. To further punctuate the point, inFAMOUS.

True, maybe the designers were like "Make him look like Kratos. People will automatically think this dude is a badass."
Except most games don't have the balls to give your guy swords on chains.
That's not the OG. This is the OG.Haa, awesome movie, magical alien-revealing sunglasses hurrah!
While I agree with the sentiment, the image is VERY forced. I mean, choosing a single character from a game with a cast of many to make that point? And he's not even nearly as generic as the others (Heavy)? Similar for some of the other games. Half of the images are joke stuff anyway, like Mario. And there plenty creative games around, they just aren't games that even the image creator would probably recommend over something like Gears of War. I mean, it's the gamers who are at fault for these developments honestly. When Gears of War sells 5 million copies and Okami doesn't even make it to half between the PS2 and Wii releases combined, which game is going to be copied more? Don't blame the developers, just put your money where your mouth is and go buy the good stuff. Go buy Little King's Story and Muramasa. Sure, they'll never achieve a million of sales, but at least your purchases will count toward funding studios like these that need it the most to continue making these now-niche experiences.. Of course, people would rather bash the platform these games are on, or claim they should be $15 digital releases or something else, then once-a-year make images like these which mock themselves more than the games and their developers...

We have a Bald Space Marine concept you know ;)
I shaved my head down to Cole length this summer. It's overrated. I did not experience any sensations of added badassery. I feel cheated.
Edit: However, I did look significantly less like a girl than I did when my hair was about four inches long.
Conclusion: Modern character designers are dumb.
