Phantasy Star Online 1 and 2 on the Nintendo Gamecube. What awesome, awesome memories.
What was the first game you played online?
I don't remember the name, but it was some telnet MUD. My mother was getting her teaching degree and would often take me to the computer labs that had T1 connections on her campus and we'd be there for hours. This was in like... somewhere around 93-95. The first graphical game I played was at the same computer lab and it was shareware Quake via this service called Kali.net.
I played Doom 2 on LAN, but on the intertubes, my first MP game was Raven Shield. Had some good times with that, and to this day, it's probably the game I've played most MP with.
First game I ever played online was Diablo II on my Dell Latitude running Windows 98. Good times were had.
First game on console I ever played online was either Halo 2 or Marble Blast Ultra on the Xbox 360. I didn't get any of the adapters for the Gamecube or PS2, and I didn't get Live until I bought my 360 (and it came with a trial).

@MordeaniisChaosBecause it would have been Diablo 2 and for a lot of people this generation is the first they've played online like 6 years after those of us who played on the PC. I chose to limit myself to picking a game from a generation where most modern video game players got online capabilities.Probably Diablo 2.

I'm not going to include PC gaming so the first game I played online was the fucking amazing online co op for Crackdown.
Why are you not including PC? That seems silly and totally not the question asked.
Yet everyone here seems to be posting about BBS and PS1 and Diablo 2. Just thought it was weird you just decided to morph the question like that without at least giving the true answer.
The early beta versions of Counter-Strike, both over LAN and Online. Good effing times, my golden age, for sure. I've never had more fun in an online game than I did in CS. Man, there were times when mappacks, by the bucket load, were free. Drag n drop em into the maps folder, and GO GO GO GO !!
This one is actually really hard, I kinda have no idea. I want to say like Quake or Doom or something, but I'm not sure if that's true. I do know it was definitely some old PC shooter obviously though. And I think the first one on a console was Halo 2 or Socom.
Because I only played all of 3 minutes of Diablo online. My Internet was not good enough. I chose to go with the first game I played at least 5 minutes of online.@MariachiMacabre said:

That's a much more reasonable explanation.

Americas army, a multi player FPS that the army was using to recruit, but it was actually a great game
SHHH NOT A RECRUITING TOOL.
Now that I think about it. I did play some counter strike on LAN in 1 of probably 5 video cafes? Don't know their real name but to say the least it's probably gone now
Probably around 1995 we played a lot Neverwinter Nights AOL at a friends place, after our PnP sessions. Let's say it was a pretty fun but also very expensive experience...

Delta Force. It was the first game I played consistently online, and it blew my mind the first time I got it running.
Did you ever play Delta Force 2? I spent so much time playing that online it was ridiculous. The experience of hiking several kilometers over snowy mountains with a Barrett Sniper Rifle behind enemy lines and getting a bead on their spawn point for long range camping shenanigans is something I'll probably never experience again.
Of course! I played Delta Force 2, Delta Force: Task Force Dagger, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, and Joint Operations. What you just described is why I loved their games so much. I would literally take an hour to position drive a jeep to the enemy base in joint operations, position myself a few kilometers away and just snipe out the helicopter pilots when they would try to take off. The sheer thrill of them chasing after me after figuring it out was something few games have done for me since.
Either Runescape or Midtown Madness 3.
Midtown Madness 3 for me is the last great racing game. Nothing that has come out since then has quite matched what I personally want from that type of game... I CALL FOR A REBOOT!
red faction guerilla. yeah I know I haven't been playing games for a long time want to fight about it
Probably Counter-Strike when it first was released way back in the day. I think before CS I only had a Windows 3.1 machine.
The first one I remember is the original Neverwinter Nights.
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal I think. I'm pretty sure it had pregame lobby keyboard chat. Main thing I remember is trying to figure out what g^ stood for. And I'm pretty sure I couldn't get it to work through our modem and I ended up using dial-up. Good times.
I played text-based things like MUDs back in the day, but I'm pretty sure the first "real" game I played online was Phantasy Star Online.
Counter Strike: Source, which was only because a bunch of school friends played regularly, even though back in 2004 my computer was so junky that it couldn't even run that game above 1152 x 864.
First game I really got into was the original Gears of War, which I'd totally poop sock for 4 hours a night for pretty much half a year until friends stopped playing it/ Halo 3 came out and fucked everything up.
