007: Nightfire for the PC.
What was the first game you played online?
Does anyone else remember The Sierra Network? They had a lot of games that you could play on there, but I spent most of my time playing Red Baron and Shadow of Yserbius.
Runescape, motherfucker. Back near the end of '02 I think. I didn't have my own PC before that, but ever since I've always preferred playing games on PC. I guess it's what made me who I am today. I loved games before then, but they were more of a secondary hobby for me (even though I still played them a ton) until Runescape dug its claws in me.
I believe mine would be PSO on the Dreamcast. I remember getting dial-up set up so I could go online with the Dreamcast(had no PC until a couple years after that).
Didn't last for long.... But shogo mobile armor division on pc!! WITH A GAMEPAD! No second analog stick either... Most amazing thing in the world!
But more for realzies? Socom 1/madden on the ps2. Most...amazing...thing...ever! Madden came with the adapter for ps2. Fun fun.
Either COD4 or Halo 3. So, good first impression either way!
Actually the first time I played COD4, I immediately got spawnkilled and quit because I thought I did something wrong.
Probably Diablo 2.

I'm not going to include PC gaming so the first game I played online was the fucking amazing online co op for Crackdown.
Why are you not including PC? That seems silly and totally not the question asked.
Socom 2. Only had one computer at the time and that computer was located in my informal dining room. So I had a 13" tube tv and a ps2 with all kinds of wires sitting on my parents dining room table. Ghetto fun.
Legend of the Red Dragon, back on a local BBS.
I don't remember, but it was probably Quake 3 or some other shooter of the time.
I did play Star Trek Elite Force online a LOT.
Metal Gear Online when it came out with MGS 4. I was not into PC gaming in my younger days. I had no interest playing online when I had PS2. Spending more money to buy a network adapter and setting up was too much of a hassle for me. I understood why people have said Metal Gear solid was not meant to be played online as a third person shooter. MGO had it's problems--multiple logins, not enough players of similar skill level. In terms of technology, I was catching up it what gaming in general had to offer. The ability to play and talk with other people who are far away. Not having reliable wireless internet and dealing with foul-mouthed twelve years has soured my online experience. I'll go back to play online once in a while.
