Ok. I love classic rock and rock in general. Accordingly, I have a few favorite guitarists.
Greatest guitarists ever?
adding to the list would be Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Ritchie Blackmore, man the list can go on and on
Well since it seems many of the greats have been named, I'm going to go with an underrated guitarist.
Jorma Kaukonen
Muhammed Suiçmez (Necrophagist)
and of course, Eddie Van Halen.
"I expected all of the above answers, but Dave Mustaine? Hahahahaha. He's still got heroin running through the veins in his hands. He can barely keep rhythm anymore."Ehh, no he dos'nt actually ... he's been clean for years. He's better than Kirk Hamhawk and James Hetfag anyway if your just a Metallica fanboy. He was excellent at Download last year and when I seen them in Dublin
"Whatever you say bubs. I'm clearly a 13 year old boy who loves Metallica because I speak the truth about a mediocre guitarist.Sorry thats not truth, its ignorance, mixed with a bit of jealousy and fanboyism.
What would I know, I've only been playing for 5 years."

Jimi Hendrix is dead, so I think Dave Mustaine is probably in a better position to be playing guitar.
"Correction, was."Megadeth is still making good music. Metallica? Not so sure. But it's your opinion. So lets leave it at that.
Well I wasn't implying you thought that Metallica was still making good music. I was just saying that Dave Mustaine sucking is your view on things. I'll admit that he was probably a better player when he was high on drugs all the time, but I'm glad he's clean now.
This dude is worth a mention.
Though i have no idea what his music is like. He could be a terrible composer.
Aside from most of the guys already mentioned in this thread, I really like Mike McCready and Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam, and John Frusciante from the Chili Peppers. All three are amazingly talented, but, unfortunately, they often seem to be overlooked in discusssions such as these.
I love how these threads lead invariably to acid-throwing contests (though, this one was rather mild).
I also love Buckethead, so I'm completely biased, and therefore, my opinion should not be considered. Disregard the whole of this post.
"i would have to say Jimmy Page"
I Hate Jimmy Page!
lulz, just had to say that.
I don't think he's the best though. Led Zeppelin doesn't really play such hard songs and it's really not anything more than average
Anyway, the greatest guitarist is probably not even in a band. That being said, what's the point of going for guitarists with catchy songs now rather than just any band with a catchy song?
"Stevie Ray Vaughan.SRV was definetly one of the best guitarist he played with so much feel and thats what makes him better then technically skilled guitarist that can sweep all crazy and all that other stuff.
Sure, he doesn't play 3,000 notes a second, but that's not what playing guitar is about. He played with real soul and feeling, and it comes through in his music."
Jimmy Page is my favorite of all guitarists and Dave Murray is great too
