I don't really see or hear it used that often. But yesterday as I was playing ssf4, I got beat convincingly by an A rank Chunli, and he/she messaged saying "gg hun". Now... I didn't really know whether he/she was trying to be nice, or just trying to be diminutive to me. Then I realized, that for some reason I've always pictured the word "hun" as being spoken by a female. I also imagine the speaker flicking there wrist while saying it, like when people say "oh you ;)" So I'm at a loss, I don't really know what to make of this word's meaning/connotation and how to take that chun-player's message.

Only women say hun.

Also, it's used as a belittlement.

I don't think you can say it is intrinsically patronizing. It could be used familiarly.

Hun should be used only by women, usually those with Southern, homely vibes, especially those who are waitresses, and are looking for a tip.

Say it to the wrong person in Glasgow and you couldn't be looking at a few days in the hospital.

I don't like it if it's said by strangers. It's patronising and belittling.

I've met some people who have used that word a lot as if it was a period. Usually they're older women.

Mostly women say, "hun." If a guy says it, it's because they are talking to a lady friend, and I've never really heard that term being used in a negative fashion, mainly because there's nothing negative about it. If anything, it is a friendly and comforting term.

It must be a regional thing then I guess...
I could swear the whole southern lady thing was just a stereotype, guess I was wrong.

True probably and yeah that would the positive usage of the word of course...
But I definitely wouldn't say it can't be used negatively at all, I mean as a lot of people were already saying it can be rather belittling if used incorrectly.

I hate when old women I don't like call me "hun".  Always seem to use it when they want to talk down to you.  Back and forth between lovers I hear it a lot around here though and it's fine that way.

Well, considering that you lost "convincingly", they're either being condescending or they believe they're married to you.

That's always been a term of endearment from girlfriends and friends of the female persuasion.

Chances are, unless they are the matronly type, it was them being bitchy. Or it was secretly your special someone.
But then, bitchy is usually something that comes from losers, not winners. So maybe it was just a friendly remark.

I've heard it used between married couples as a shortened, "Honey". In your case, he/she might have been talking down to you. Not necessarily maliciously, just sort of, "Ah, you did your best, hun". Still annoying as hell if that's the case though.
