The military taught me Farsi. Have about 7 years of experience though I am not as fluent as I once was.

I have some experience with German, Dari, Pashtu, Arabic, Mandarin and Korean though I couldn't really hold a conversation in any of them for long.

English: Native language

Spanish: Castilian Spanish fluent. My mom is Spanish and my dad American. I was born in Madrid, Spain and live in Texas now (so Spanish is VERY MUCH a needed language) I just tend to speak it with the "th" sound of Castilian Spanish as opposed to Mexican Spanish.

German: Anything from Rammstein, I know the English translation. :)

Except for Swedish (native) and English, I know some German which I learned in high school because we had to study a third language.

Right now I'm learning Korean, because I'm crazy into Korean movies, tv and music. I only started studying it for real recently so I just know some basic stuff.

Irish: Enough to hold a reasonable conversation because I was made to in school.

German: Enough to hold a less sophisticated conversation, learned in school because everyone needs a foreign language here for university. (Except foreigners actually)

Being fluent in Irish and having no foreign language seems like a huge waste to me.

Spanish because I'm of Mexican descent.

French because I took 3 years of it, but they were 3 shitty years. I've forgotten a lot of it, but seeing subtitles during a French film makes some stuff come back. Still can't understand native speakers' conversations though. I think with some actual practice, I could learn enough pretty quick.

I know French. I spent five years studying it in secondary school, but it was probably the worst taught class I went through by a pretty wide margin. Eventually I walked away with a GCSE in it though.

Some French...enough to converse if needed, and very little Spanish. I tried to take Arabic, but the teacher wasn't very good.

I speak English, Farsi, or Persian depending on your outlook, Swedish, and some Danish. Though Swedish and Danish, on a surface level, seem interchangeable to one's earholes, there's a completely different cadance to the Danish language that throw them completely off one another in terms of their similarities. The extent to which inflections and accens vary is distinct. Scandinavian languages, with the exception of a few, are offshoots of themselves, so I have a vague understanding of what's being said when folks speak Norwegian, though when it comes time to speak and emulate their accents, NO CAN DO.

College requires it.

My town has a large Spanish-speaking population.

America in general has a large Spanish-speaking population.

I can speak/read/understand French because I live in Montreal, but I'm not even close to being fluent. Most French people here are assholes, so I'm an idiot and don't learn the language in spite of that, when really I should learn it so I call tell them off in their own tongue.

@wmaustin55:

  • Being born to Arab parents in an English-speaking country, I'd count them both as my first language. Thanks mum & dad.
  • Swedish: lived here for too many years, I'm almost fluent now.
  • Japanese: words and phrases, can read hiragana and katakana. I wouldn't say I'm a full weaboo, but I enjoy the occasional anime.
  • French: 2-3 years in school, forgotten most of it by now.
  • Russian: took this one year in middle school. Can still read Cyrillic, but only know a few actual words. "Eta chussee!"
  • BONUS: Maltese - being a hodgepodge of Arabic, Italian and English, I'm fascinated by how weird it sounds, and how much I can actually understand

Would love to properly learn Japanese, as well as German and Italian.
