I mistake the thread title for artists out now, so this Thom Yorke. That vocal outro to that song is fucking brilliant.

god, i'm so glad you posted that performance of 'how to disappear...' that's probably in my top 5 of all time. god DAMN what a song.

that whole concert, for that matter. 'motion picture' is a revelation.

Will look into it, was just looking for the original track and found this, he seems to sing way better live. Do you know the name of the DVD this is from? might try and get a copy.

This is probably his catchiest song and I shouldve probably showed you a live performance where his range is more prevalent but I think this should be a good start

Also as an MJ fan, I have been forced to concede that at least in English, he is unmatched. Most definitely with modern music. If you want old schoo style crooners, there are definitely some very good ones though.

@Aegon: I hope to God he is.....  I recently started listening to his songs produced by Pharell.  He probably should be coming out with some music in a year or two because he went on a long break like this before he released anything.   Or he needs to find that one producer that he seems to work with at a time.

And ?uestlove is being festive as hell.  I have no clue as to why he has his hands like that.....

I would love to say Allen Stone but sadly, this is the only song where he actually uses his voice. The rest of his songs just aren't my cup of tea but this one right here, damn.

Chino Moreno from Deftones

Anthony Green from Circa Survive

Emiliana Torrini

Bjork

Thom Yorke of Radiohead

Jonsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros

Couldn't possibly choose between all those great musicians, as these are some of my all-time favourite artists.

Yeah that's him. You might also know him from the song Exile Vilify from the Portal 2 soundtrack.

Tom Waits is the obvious answer, as has been stated.

As for more technical singing, Beth Gibbons has an absolutely INCREDIBLE voice. That's my pick for sure. (sorry about the poor sound, I can't find the version from the Roseland live album for the life of me. This is still an excellent example of her ability. The screams near the end still give me chills.)

Others of note:

I really enjoy Florence Welch's singing as well, but I haven't heard her do anything particularly impressive. Not a knock on her, just that there are so many excellent singers.

Emilie Autumn has a great voice too, but she fudges certain notes, especially live. It sounds good in the context of her music, but it's still a notable limitation. The way she can go from "light and airy new age sex goddess" to "growling angry goth rocker" in the blink of an eye is always a treat, though.

There is no "best" voice in modern music, or in any music. The voice is an instrment that can be used in many ways to convey many emotions, from angelic choirs to rasping, tortured shrieking. You can't pin down one artist and say they're the "best." It just doesn't work that way.

Well whatever, here's some guys I like:

Jeff Buckley

Atilla Csihar (of Sunn 0))), Mayhem)

Lord Worm (Cryptopsy)

Yamatsuka Eye (Naked City, various other Jazz/Grind stuff)

OK. I'm going mainstream here.

Absolute raw power. The last 45 seconds is pretty incredible. She even surprises herself at the end with the crazy reverb haha. Obviously though, music might be the most subjective thing on the planet, so to each his/her own.

I don't know if it's "the best voice in modern music", but I really love the way Phil Mogg's voice has matured. It wasn't bad back when he started out in UFO over 40 years ago, but now that he's gotten older it's just on completely different level. Incredibly manly and soulful.

In the UK there's Jessie J, whose songs consist of fairly throwaway, catchy, chart pop stuff mainly, I do think she has an extremely strong voice though, and I like her voice more than her music, if that makes sense.

oft mistaken for Katy Perry (similar sounding) but can actually sing.

Veela has a nice voice.

As does Sara Kay, where the only thing I know about her is that she's sung in a few Klaypex songs.
I could probably post more but those were the first two that came to mind. Both singers from Nightwish have been pretty good, too. And the main singer from Kamelot.

Edit: Damn, just looked it up and apparently Roy Kahn left Kamelot back in 2011. He was a great vocalist.

Well it back fired on you. If giantbomb taught me anything, it was to enjoy things ironically and that whole experience was pretty great. And i knew it was a troll video, it has no business here. What did it for me was the dark face she made when she said "cmon drink this....you like vegetable juice, dont you?...I've decided you must, right now" and of course she is shaking the bottle in a very suggestive way. It's awesome.
