The first Jurassic Park made a fantastic movie, better writing and more believable characters than the book IMO.

BTW, Lost World book was WAY better than the movie.

No Country For Old Men and Jurassic Park are a couple of my favorites. I am also a sucker for the recent War of the Worlds movie. I know the story is completely different, but it's still War of the Worlds.

@gingertastic_10: Gone Baby Gone was such a powerful and well crafted film. I'll have to read the book now, I reckon.

Oh, and my fave is Fight Club. I know, yawn. But the film's better than the book for mine.

@gingertastic_10: Mystic River's one of those films I only really got into the second time around. I liked it enough on the first viewing, but the next one sure stuck.

Cheers for the info!

Probably No Country For Old Men..... Cormac McCarthy writes fantastic stories and the movie handled his work very well.  Cant wait for The Road to hit the big screen.

Probably The Godfather or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The former wasn't that faithful to the book and the latter also strayed far but both are two of the greatest movies ever and derived a lot of their greatness from their respective authors.

The Godfather, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lawrence of Arabia (to an extent), Blade Runner, 2001... the list goes on. As many great movies are based on books as are original ideas- there's an insane amount of spectacular book-to-movie adaptations.

To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee 1960/film 1962) is number one with The Big Sleep (Raymond Chandler 1939/film 1946) right behind.  The Black Stallion (Walter Farley 1941/film 1979) and Never Cry Wolf (Farley Mowat 1963/film 1983) were also pretty good, but in those cases the books were better.  I mention them because they we successful at turning a book where the main character is isolated from other humans for a good portion of the story (no dialog) into entertaining films.

I think "Wake Up" playing during the trailer made it much better too.

Ooo, and rumor has it that Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be working on the music as well.

But the movie looks like it has a much deeper look into the story, discribing why this kid wants to go "where the wild things are". So many things could have went wrong with it, but it looks phenominal so far.

Forrest Gump immediately comes to mind. As to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and a recent favorite of mine: Let the Right One In, which I loved even though I've never read the book.

V for Vendetta was done really well and stuck to the source material fairly well.

American Psycho wasn't as good as the book, but was still an epic watch.

If anyone says the Watchmen they haven't read the book.

As others have mentioned, A Clockwork Orange, One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest are some of my favorite films made from movies, but I'd also include Oldboy. (I guess that counts?)

Bram Strokers Dracula was a great book and movie. Also Of Mice and Men. Although the movie wasn't as entertaining to me as the book. I really enjoyed Forrest Gump but I have never read the book. I'm not sure if I should or not.

Oh god, I can't believe this thread took an entire page of posts until somebody said Fight Club. Holy god damn. Of course Fight Club. Then Jurassic Park (the best example of why fanboys demanding a movie to be close to the book need to shut the fuck up), The Neverending Story, and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Honorable mention goes to Misery. The Stephen King movie that is actually better than the book.

This is tough, since pretty much every other movie ever made is based off of a novel, at least loosely. But here goes:

Let The Right One In
The Shining
Apocalypse Now
Most of the James Bond films.
Jurassic Park
The Outsiders
LOTR
Of Mice and Men
The Big Sleep
Clockwork Orange

My absolute favourite book to screen adaptation would be To Kill a Mocking Bird. I don't think any movie has done it as well as that one.

UHM..   The Silence of the Lambs.   Easily my favorite movie of all time.  Does complete justice to the source material.

Erm.... and just to name another one that people seem to not be mentioning..  Harry Potter series.   Of course the movies aren't near as good as the books.  But, personally I've read and seen them all more than twice and I think the movies supplement the books just fine.

One to look out for in the future:  The Hobbit is being directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), with the assistance of Mr. Jackson and Mrs. Walsh.    <3
