Concepts

Alternate Game Over Screen

Games that feature more than one style of Game Over screen. Alternate Game Over screens are often used when the player loses in specific ways.
Auto-Scrolling Levels

Levels that progress forward by themselves at a fixed rate.
Bandit

A rogue character who doesn't obey the law, bandits are known to steal from people for their own selfish gain.
Bats

Bats are small flying mammals. They may frequent caves or haunted houses.
Bee

Usually yellow and black striped, these flying, flower loving loving insects can come singly or in a swarm. A major producer of honey and stings.
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Countdown Timer

The ultimate pressure feature. You have to complete the task at hand, be it finishing your opponent or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time depending on which game you're playing. So be quick or you lose.
Dash

A quick burst of speed that propels you slightly forward or backwards.
Day/Night Cycle

Environments cycle between day and night, often with effects on other aspects of the game.
Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Deliberately Retro

Sometimes designers add old-school things on purpose to enhance game design.
Digital Distribution

Digital Distribution is the concept of purchasing digital media via the internet and having it sent to the user directly via the internet. No physical representation of this content is given but the content resides on the users hard drive and is legally owned by them.
E3 2009

Experience Points

Experience Points are part of a character advancement system commonly found in RPGs. These points are generally gained by defeating an enemy or completing a task.
Fake Game Over Screen

A 'Game Over' screen that turns out to be fake.
Fetch Quests

An industry game design convention that's appeared in many games over the years. The fetch quest involves sending the player out to collect a certain number of items, and return them to complete the quest. A staple of the RPG and Adventure game genre.
Games That Ask You to "Press Start" But Will Accept Other Buttons

An interesting revelation. While some games will only accept a START button press, many other games aren't as strict.
Hero Class

A special character type found in certain roleplaying games which is initially unselectable and must be earned, often as an unlockable or a promotion for an existing character who has achieved a high level or quest.
Hit Points

An indication of the amount of damage a character can sustain in game. The loss of all hit points results in the players death, or penalty.
Important Text

The best way to make sure even the stupidest players know that certain people, places, terms, or concepts in a game are important is to highlight those words in the text with different coloured letters, or through the use of bold, italicized, or all-caps text.
Inconvenient Malfunction

When stuff that always used to work suddenly break down when you need it the most and you either have to fix it or find another way around.
Inventory

A gameplay mechanic allowing players to store their items and freely carry them around.
Leveling Up

The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points by completing a variety of tasks such as quests or by "farming" such as killing other characters for their experience points.
Lumberjack

A lumberjack is a person who cuts down trees for a living. Also considered to be very manly and will almost always have a beard. Usually seen wearing flannel.
Magic

The concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods, breaking the fundamental laws of science.
Mantis

A predatory insect native to warmer regions. Just be glad you aren't prey.
Minions

The guys (usually little) who follow you around in games. They can be a help, or an annoyance.
Mole

A small animal that digs tunnels and mostly feeds on earthworms.
Overlord

A title only given to the most evil and corrupted of rulers.
Parody

A game or character that pokes gentle fun at an existing work of entertainment by being very similar to that work and exaggerating its features.
