Okay so Jorge calls the head scientist lady from ONI "mom" and she sort of responds to that, but why does he have an accent and she does not? Is this just a reference to the fact that she was the new female presence once he was taken into the Spartan project? Also, why does Jun have a European accent when he is from Korea or Japan (probably Korea). THESE ACCENTS CONFUSE ME!!!
Halo: Reach
Game » consists of 13 releases. Released Sep 14, 2010
A prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, chronicling one of the most cataclysmic events of the Halo Universe through the eyes of a squad of Spartan super-soldiers known as Noble Team. It is also the last game in the series developed by Bungie.
Jorge Accent?
Just because Jun has an Asian appearance doesn't mean he's from the planet Earth. He could be from a colony where the accent is different.
In the real world there are plenty of Asian people who do not speak with an Asian accent :)
I thought it was a clone-trooper-esque New Zealand accent more than British myself.....didn't exactly listen carefully though.
Oh, and Jun's accent is kind of all over the place generally....at times I think it does sound asian, but sometimes it's more Italian/French sounding. And then at times he kind of forgets to kick the accent in until halfway through a line and sounds American for the first half of it.
From what I can remember reading (and hearing), the English do call older women "mum" as a sign of respect. Armed with this knowledge I was not phased by Jorge's use of the term, if that is what he said. Mult-cultural and blahblahblah UNSC is a happy rainbow.
" My biggest beef is that it's spell Jorge and pronounced 'George'....it's fuckin weird. "Like Jeff and Geoff, both pronounced the same but spelt differently is all.
And for those wondering, Jorge's accent is English because his voice actor is English. However the character was born on Reach!
Fairly sure Jorge's voice actor was in Army of Two: The 40th Day as the mercenary Rios & Salem meet at the very start of the game.
" My biggest beef is that it's spelled Jorge and pronounced 'George'....it's fuckin weird. "Did you never watch The Rescuers as a kid? The girl mouse is Hungarian, and it's how she says George. Most of the people settled on Reach are Austro-Hungarian, hence why Jorge speaks the language fluently. He sounds South African to me too, to be honest.
And yes, with subs on he says ma'am. Halsey is the Spartan II project's creator, so they show her a lot of respect. It's also why she asks what he did to her armour...
Jorge was born on Reach and Reach was mostly a planet where Eastern Europeans moved to. They have their own language just like in the earlier levels where he is the translator for the team. Plus, he calls Halsey mom because she was the only mother-figure to the Spartan II program. She didn't play as big as a part with Spartan III and that is why Jorge has a much higher respect for her then the rest of noble team.
Just because Jun has an Asian appearance doesn't mean he's from the planet Earth. This point amplifies the silliness of nit-picking their accents.
I mean, normally one could make the argument that "just because he's Asian doesn't mean he was raised in Asia" but as you said, in the Halo universe, just because he's Asian doesn't mean he's ever even been on Earth, let alone the country or continent.
" @miracleboy said:This."Is this just a reference to the fact that she was the new female presence once he was taken into the Spartan project?"Halsey created the SPARTAN-II program in which they abducted children for genetic augmentation. Jorge was recruited at the age of 6 and thus refers to her as "mom." "
She's the only mother figure he would have had growing up. And he's the only SPARTAN II of the group, the rest are III's which was a project led by Halseys rival. Cheaper and not as advanced that's why Jorge is so much bigger.

He says 'Ma'am' ffs.
Found the voice actor of Jorge on IMDB.
Hakeem Kae-Kazim, a Nigerian born actor trained in the UK which explains the English accent.
This is Jorge's voice actor. He's Nigerian, but he trained in the UK." " He clearly says "mom", you guys are crazy. "Put subs on. It says ma'am. No arguing with subs.
It's not mom. It's ma'am in the sense of older women past middle aged, not mom. It just sounds like that. How do you not understand any of this? > < Stupidest question (person) I've seen in a while. Everything has to do with story context in that game, and it doesn't make sense if Jun were to speak any other language, look how he was raised. I don't think they intend to make the players believe he was just born in an asian country with parents tht speak in any other way. And I'm not going to go on with the mom thing, you should already know what's going on in Halo if you're playing this game.
I live in Mexico and here you can only get Halo : Reach dubbed in Spanish, so all my guys are speaking Spanish :(
" @MichaelBach: That suck. It's nice to have it if you want but to remove the original VO completely is just moronic. "Yeah, at least they left in the English subtitles.
" Wow! Thank you for all the info! I was going to guess that because I read Fall of Reach but I didn't get why he was the only one who called her that. "He's the only one that calls her that because he's the only Spartan-II of Noble Team, the rest are Spartan-IIIs. As a result, they don't show Halsey the respect that Jorge does, since Halsey didn't run the Spartan-III program.
Like has been said... He says ma'am, pronounced mom. Not mom as in 'mother'.
It's a British thing, similar to pronouncing Lieutenant "leftenant". Anyone who's ever seen Red Dwarf should have picked up on this immediatly.
Kryten refered to Kochanski as "mom" all the time, just as he refered to all the male crew members as "sir".
" @SpacePenguin said:I would like to know which book you are referring too. Having read the books multiple times I'm don't remember any of the spartans ever referring to her as "mom"." @jessej07: No its ma'am, thats what it says in the subtitles. "Yeah but I'm pretty sure in the books some Spartans straight up refer to her as Mom, and believe it or not...sometimes subs are different from what is actually said. "
He says "ma'am". If he'd say "mom" then why wouldn't it be so on the subtitles? Although if he did say mom, that wouldn't be too far fetched either considering that Halsey really is the only "mother figure" the Spartan IIs ever might've had.
Other than that, talking about the accents and pronounciations of names is a bit of pointless considering that the game takes place 542 years in the future and none of the Noble team members are from Earth.
" Well, first it was ma'am, and also because the nice Dr. kidnapped all the spartan IIs when they were like six. It's the closest thing they would have to a mother. "There's no way the Noble group could have been in the first Spartan group. There were none of them numbered in the 200's like all of the squad.
Not all Spartans think of her in that light, many view her as a civilian scientist out of touch with the reality of the fight they are dealing with, but all have respect for her to some degree and deep down she cares for all the Spartans. She hates that so many of them are dying or have died before even seeing combat, but she views their sacrifice as necessary.
She is not a literal biological mother to any of them though, if that's what you were asking.
" @miracleboy said:No he dosnt, he said Mom but it means Ma'am NOT HIS MOMMY"Is this just a reference to the fact that she was the new female presence once he was taken into the Spartan project?"Halsey created the SPARTAN-II program in which they abducted children for genetic augmentation. Jorge was recruited at the age of 6 and thus refers to her as "mom." "
