    Concept »

A style of action-adventure gameplay revolving around exploring a labyrinth with the necessity of locating new items and equipment to progress beyond otherwise impassable obstacles. The concept is named for its common usage in the Metroid and Castlevania franchises. While the term most commonly refers to 2D games, it can also refer to 3D games.

I have been craving to play some of these games for a bit and I would like to know what the best none Metroid or Castlevania Metroidvanias their are. I have and have beaten Shadow Complex so that is out. I also recently got Aliens Infestation but that game is so short and I am almost done with it. I will also get Castlevania SOTN but of course I would play that and Super Metroid. You guys know this stuff better than I.

Aquaria. It's like Super Metroid mixed with Fragile Dreams, because somehow, that's possible.

I've always been a big fan of Cave Story. The original PC version is freeware, so it's easy to get.

Cave Story is an amazing choice, it's a bit on the short side, though. Also what about that Monster Tale game? I always thought it looked pretty neat.

Outland is kind of like that. It's not super metroidvania-ish (fantastic phrasing!) but it resembles it enough to bear comparison.

Speaking of Super Metroid, that's the one you should play first if you are at all interested in Metroidvania games. OK, SotN is also supposed to be an exemplary model of the subgenre, what with it being the whole other half of the title and all, but I've never actually beaten SotN.

@believer258: I rather fancy Super Metroid more than SotN, SotN is too easy past a certain point. (Shield Rod...)

I have played SM a fair bit but got stuck somewhere and stopped a while ago. I will get around to restarting sometime. I also wish I had a real copy since I have a SNES but no actual games for it. Now with SOTN I was reading that the XBLA version had stuff cut out of it. Is it worse off for not having FMV and such? Is it an okay version of the game?

I haven't played Aquaria yet, but how is it like Fragile Dreams? Hearing that makes me want to play it even more now.

It may sound weird, but Dark Souls is kinda Metroidvania-ish.

I could be wrong but isn't Mega man ZX and ZX Advent for the DS kind of like a Metroidvania style game?

Dead Cells if you don’t mind some rogue-lite in your Metroidvania. Axiom Verge is quite good but also quite hard. Ori and the Blind Forest is fun and beautiful.
