Onimusha 2 brings us back to feudal Japan to battle Nobunaga once again. This entry introduces a friendship system that can drastically alter story scenes and result in different playable characters.

Concepts

Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Character Models Based on Actual People

Sometimes, rather than building a character model from scratch, a developer will choose to scan a real person, and use his or her physical attributes to create a similar character model to be used in their video game.
Combo

Typically found in fighting games, combos are a series of strung-together moves.
Cross Culture Language Skills

Characters that do not speak the localized language within the context of the game. An example being everyone in Persona speaking English while the story states that they are speaking Japanese.
Cutscene

A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
Cutscene Equipment Mismatch

You carry a shotgun when a cutscene pops up and then you are inexplicably carrying an assault rifle. Why? You didn't even have an assault rifle on you....
Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Demon

Demons are generally creatures of evil, usually from Hell, who are often totally untrustworthy even when they're not murdering everyone and destroying everything in their path.
Demon Invasion

Given that Hell totally sucks, it's not surprising that Demons are semi-constantly trying to get from there to Earth.
E3 2002

The 2002 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California on May 22-24.
Elements

The Classical Elements are usually considered to be Earth, Water, Air and Fire. In modern science, the Periodic Table has increased the number of elements to 118.
Feudal Japan

The "feudal" period of Japanese history, which was dominated by powerful regional families holding large areas of land (daimyo) and military warlords (shogun), between 1185 and 1868 AD.
Final Boss

The last boss you face in a game, usually representing the final climax of the game.
Fury

A status effect that may increase strength and vitality at the expense of drawbacks such as poorer dexterity and reduced stamina.
Hack and Slash

A term previously used to refer to RPGs that focus more on the action, today it more often refers to action games which focus on hack & slash gameplay.
Health

Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
Historical Figures in Fictional Settings

Nothing helps set a game in a specific point in time more than having a few famous faces from history drop by to say hi.
Historical Inaccuracy

Historically inaccurate games are those that do not abide by actual historical timelines for design or plot points.
Kunoichi

Female ninja.
Lady's Man

A man who attracts women and enjoys their company; A womanizer.
Male Protagonists

This concept is for games in which the main character is male.
Motion Capture Animation

Some action-oriented games make use of motion capture technology to make character's movements realistic.
New Protagonist in Sequel

Sequels that have you playing as a different character than the original game.
Ninja

Legendary, stealthy assassins from Japan's feudal era, who are ridiculously well-trained in the art of the sword, and who may or may not have access to magical powers. If you ever manage to see a ninja, you're already dead.
Non-Player Character

Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters which are controlled by whomever is playing the game.
Orbs

In many games such as Devil May Cry and God of War, Orbs, or "Souls", if you will, spawn out of the enemies you destroy and provide you with either sweet life or power. Many times these "Orbs" can also be used as a currency of sorts to upgrade.
Perks

Bonuses that players can equip to their characters to give special abilities or buffs. They are often progressively unlocked by earning experience points.
Polygonal 3D

Who needs 2D when we've got 3D? 3D, or 3 dimensions, is what we're used to seeing in almost every game these days, letting us do all sorts of awesome stuff like run in circles!
Power Up

Power Ups can be used to give the controlling character, or any other character, temporary or permanent upgrades.
Pre-rendered Backgrounds

Static background images that are not drawn in real time.
