Play Coins are a form of system-level currency earned while carrying a Nintendo 3DS that is in sleep mode. For every one hundred steps detected by the system's pedometer, the player earns one Play Coin, and a maximum of ten can be earned in one day. The 3DS can store up to 300 Play Coins; the amount earned over a thirty-day month.
Once accumulated, Play Coins can be spent in games that support them, though their exact use varies from game to game.
Examples of Use
Samurai Warriors Chronicles
In Samurai Warriors Chronicles, the player can exchange Play Coins at the in-game shop for gold that can be spent on weapon upgrades, mounts, and other items. For each Play Coin exchanged, the player receives 100 gold.
Dead or Alive: Dimensions
In Dead or Alive: Dimensions, the player can exchange ten play coins to unlock items such as costumes and figures.
Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition
In the 3DS version of Super Street Fighter IV, Play Coins can be exchanged for points to play Figure Slots.
Kid Icarus: Uprising
In Kid Icarus: Uprising, the player can exchange Play Coins in the Idol Toss minigame at a rate of one coin per egg. The eggs can then be used in the game for an opportunity to win new idols.
