So in yet another addition of news of the weird the Contra Costa Times just wrote an article about how various prisons are using meatloaf, titled "the loaf" as punishment for inmates that are behaving poorly. Yes that's right meatloaf is being used as punishment in various state correctional facilities and now has taken residence in Santa Cruz County. So here's a picture of said loaf:

CALIFORNIA RECIPE FOR DISCIPLINARY DIET LOAF
INGREDIENTS
21/2 oz. nonfat dry milk
41/2 oz. raw grated potato
41/2 oz. raw carrots, chopped or grated fine
11/2 oz. tomato juice or puree
41/2 oz. raw cabbage, chopped fine
7 oz. lean ground beef, turkey or rehydrated, canned or frozen Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
21/2 fl. oz. oil
11/2 oz. whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp. salt
4 tsp. raw onion, chopped
1 egg
6 oz. dry red beans, precooked before baking (or 16 oz. canned or cooked red kidney beans) 4 tsp. chili powder
DIRECTIONS:
Shape into a loaf and bake at 350-375 degrees for 50-70 minutes.

"Usually, they only last a couple days on the loaf before they agree to comply with directions and are given normal meals again," said Tim Sanford, the jail's food service manager for 15 years.

A little off topic, but when I was little, I always thought people in jail/prison only got bread and water to eat.

I couldnt imagine what it tastes oh wait ive been to jail before ya it tastes just how it looks. i think a rock would taste better if you itched it away.

Meatloaf, when cooked properly, is pretty damn amazing.
 
This meatloaf recipe looks like absolute garbage.

I love meatloaf, and that is not meatloaf.

 
Call me a weirdo, but I think I've got no difficulty eating that. Okay, it's nothing special and sure, after a while it will appall you. In prison, I'm much more worried about that other ''Meat'' the inmates might force you to swallow...    

I like real meatloaf.
 
In picture, that looks like bread. That's kinda creepy and unappealing. Real meatloaf is beef with onions, egg, maybe some seasonings if you so choose, maybe some bacon cus bacon makes everything better, and ketchup. MMM, real meatloaf is good.... I'm hungry now.

And they give celebrities meatloaf foams until they comply. 

At first glance, I thought that was cornbread. Not sure what to think of that as a meatloaf, though I imagine it's dry with a horrible texture.
 
Interesting to hear that it's reasonably effective, too. I guess it goes to show how people (or prisoners) take decent-tasting food for granted.

This was on Lockup on MSNBC before. It looks just as bad as it sounds, but hey, at least one guy likes it.

Meatloaf: More humane than solitary confinement.

God...that meatloaf looks horrible...when done correctly, meatloaf can be one of the best dishes to eat. This loaf sounds like some seriously nasty stuff (even if it is very nutritious for you).

Ya know, with a little ketchup and BBQ sauce on it before and while it bakes... well, that wouldn't be too bad!

It looks more line cornbread than meatloaf. Or maybe Thanksgiving dressing. Actually, I don't think it looks that bad. I'd try it.

It doesn't look that bad. It has more ingredients than the meatloaf I make. A little water to wash it down and everything should be fine.

In that video posted, it didn't look TOO bad, especially considering the fact that you are, well you know, in prison.

Spiceworld: the movie, the game? im not sure if they made a game for the movie but the movie definitely had meatloaf in it ...

It's certainly an unusual punishment and it doesn't look very appetizing, but I don't think this really qualifies as a cruel punishment.

Holy shit, I live in Contra Costa County. Must make sure I stay out of prison, lest I face the wrath of THE LOAF.
