On the heels of Square Enix's announcement that Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will ship a week earlier than anticipated, Nintendo has revealed that Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is hitting earlier, too. The game's new release date is September 12--a full eight days less than its previously pegged September 20 release date.

    OLD.
    OLD.

The Unwound Future will be the third Layton game to hit US shores, and while it'll have that new car smell for us, it's definitely old news in Japan where it's been on store shelves since late 2008. One more Layton titles--the sequel to Unwound Future--is still awaiting localization: 2009's Professor Layton and the Spectre's Flute. A fifth title, dubbed Mask of the Miracle, is due out in Japan this Fall.

The Unwound Future, as you might have guessed, revolves around time travel. The plot kicks off in earnest once Layton's sidekick, Luke, receives a message from himself after the duo spend a day checking out a new-fangled time-machine. Puzzles and hijinks ensue as the two get comfortable in its seat and start solving the mysteries future-London holds.

Not sure why it takes them so long to get it out in the US. But I don't care. Good news, and I can't wait to get it.

@RE_Player92:  I think publishers have learned a little something from Batman last year, and realized that avoiding the October/November crunch can help a game out considerably.

I've had 1 and 2 forever, but never gotten past more than 10 puzzles in the first game. It makes me feel so stupid, but I've got to catch up now.

@damnboyadvance: I think a lot of it is that the first game was very, very delayed, and then Nintendo decided that they should spread them out to avoid sequel fatigue. Much like the Phoenix Wright games, really. Hopefully we'll catch up sooner or later.

I can't wait to get my hands on this game.  I love the first two.  My only problem is I finish them in a weekend and then I have to wait a year+ for my next Layton fix

Yeah you do. You'll feel pretty good about yourself once you beat the game without cheating.

Yes, that could be very true. Nintendo is usually good about releasing games around the same time in different regions, so I guess I could forgive them. :)

Damn it, I thought the industry was past the whole Japan exclusivity thing. The best thing we've to combat this is Conker's Bad Fur Day and maybe a few sports games.

I suppose that I should get around to beating the first one at some point.  Did anyone else put all of the furniture in Layton's room, leaving Luke to sleep on the floor?

The NA games are just behind the JP releases because it takes time deciding if the market would accept a title like this plus all the translation and localization work that needs to be done when you decide to launch it plus seeing if it actually makes money in the new market after release. It's not a "exclusivity" thing.

I can see the actual localization process slowing things down, given that old FF games used to take 9 months to escape Japan, but how is culture an issue? It's Professor Layton, not some obscure Naruto rhythm game.

Any reference, word play, symbol use and logical progression that would make sense for someone japanese but not for someone in america. More so in a puzzle title like this.

That sounds more like something you do in the localization process. The stories are like Sherlock Holmes for Kids, right? Besides, from my experiences with The Diabolical Box, none of the puzzles came off as something where a culture barrier would destroy them.

I assumed that's what you meant since I actually never mentioned "culture" in my post but you decided to ask about it anyway. Also the reason you didn't notice a puzzle that would get destroyed by the culture barrier is precisely because of localization.

Man I've only played the first game yet, loved it though, except that one puzzle that took ages and that other one that I never finished. Glad to se it doing well though, I'm even sorta stoked for the movie.

Sort of. Still, all those logic puzzles have to be translated to make sense too in english too. For example imagine if in the japanese game they tell you something like "we need to find something that rhymes with this letter" and they give you the letter "a". The "a" in japanese sounds fucking nothing like the "a" in english so when they are translating that puzzle they have to find an equivalent sounding thing or something that makes sense in the context of the game and the solution already programmed into the game or just straight up remake that puzzle.

They still have the A sound, though; it's "ei". OK, that's just nitpicky.

Now there are TWO Lukes?  I don't think the DS is large enough to contain that much Awesome.
I wonder if future Luke is cold and bitter from being unable to stop the bomb that destroyed New York. Odds on grief beard?
