SSBB: Tearing you a new hole!

When Super Smash Bro's Brawl arrived

I immediately set about in unlocking my old-school favorite Falco. I could absolutely OWN with him on Melee, and I was expecting to be able to do likewise in the new game. But
Pit
Pit
somehow when he finally arrived... it just didnt feel right. I have since spent a fair amount of time with the game, allowing myself to become accostomed to the new styles of fighting, new moves and items. As a result my new favorite character is Pit. Its quite annoying really, because I really wanted it to be Sonic or Pokemon Trainer. But Super Smash Bros has a specific groove, and sometimes you may find yourself fitting into a slot that you didnt expect (that happens sometimes in real life too =D)

And so, i'm now a Pit player.

You guys must have all had some time with SSBB by now, do any of you find yourselves gravitating towards a new source of brother smashing pleasure?

"Obsessed with the Games?"

So I double clicked

on my friendly desktop Firefox icon, and was pleasantly forwarded to my homepage, as both intstructed and intended. Google.co.uk welcomed me with open arms. I was greeted to this merry and familiar sight:
A cunning trap!
A cunning trap!
And was just typing in the address of our trusty Giantbomb(.com) when a sutble message caught my eye.

Obsessed with the Games?

It seemed to say.

If only you knew, was my quick reply. And quick too was my reaction as I hastily clicked the google link, awaiting with interest the fascinating article to which I was being forwarded.
I, of course, immediately assumumed it was computer games that were the new hot topic and worthy of immediate global attention. I thought happily to myself - "Ahhh, finally computer games are being embraced as a sincere form of modern media, and we are now arriving at a time of global recognition and celebration as to the acomplishments of this great industry."

What a fool I was.

I was forwarded, instead, to a website stacked with information - nay, clustered with information about some mess called the Olympics... The very word left a foul taste in my mouth, and I could feel the skin on my fingers crawl with excessive distaste as to the grim recognition of misinterpretation.

You win this time Google. But soon Computer Game obsessed people like me are going to stand up to you and your Olympic shenanagains with a groundbreaking message. One day, it will be OUR time on your homepage. And when that time comes I hope you are still wearing your running shoes pal, because we are bringing the (metaphorical) pain to your yard!

Dont mess with us, you Olympiad bitches. Theres a new bomb in town, and I hear its pretty... giant?

BRAAAAIIINS....

I love zombies

More than anything. I love the slow stumbling ones that wander around with an amusing ambiguity and confusion. I love the speedy running ones which are super violent and agressive, with psychotic rage issues. And I love the deformed mutated ones that are mega strong and can rip off limbs and leap huge distances. One of my favorite films is Shaun Of The Dead, closely followed by Night Of The Living Dead, and Dawn Of The Dead. I also love the film Resident Evil 1 (there werent enough zombies in 2). I luuuuuuurve zombies. I love resident evil games (especially 4), I love the Boxhead: Zombie Wars games, and I love watching zombies being shot in the face. I even loved the (terrible) Death Proof zombies.

So I am EXCITED for Left 4 Dead. That game looks like its going to be awesome, and I love... BRAAAAAAAAAAINS.

So whats your best ever Zombie experiance? Are there any I should check out while I wait for this upcoming zombie awesomeness?

B:TDK, Braid, TP and TF2

I have a lot to talk about, which is why I feel its important to use as many small and confusing acronyms as possible.

Firstly

Batman: The Dark Knight
A maze of greatness.
A maze of greatness.

Saw this at the cinema today. I'm sure everyone has already formed their oppinions of this so i'm just going to say, it was long and mostly what I expected. There was some clever writing, but as a superhero film remained largely predictable. Kudos for creating tension underlying Batmans morality dilemma, I thought that was really great. Heath Ledger was, as you all know, fantastic.

But More Importantly

I love watching the adverts and previews at the begginning of the film. They always fill you with such hope and positive anticipation for the upcoming releases, and this often outweighs your final jubilation when they are eventually released. Anyways two films stood out as ones to watch:
  • Tropic Thunder - I'm a big Jack Black fan, and Stiller and Downey Jr are also pretty awesome. This films looks hilarious.
  • Dont Mess With The Zohan - Adam Sandler may only be able to play one character, but he still manages to crack me up with his mindlessly terrible humour. Mmmm... mindless...

Secondly

Braid

This game is awe-inspiringly beautiful. Both in terms of aesthetic and gameplay, it is truely stunning. I have been un-nervingly blown away by Braid's charming atmosphere and it mature underlying context. This is a wonderful achievement, and almost makes it worth being completely ripped off by Microsoft over the price. Almost...

Penultimately

TP....?

I forgot what these letters stand for... anyone have any suggestions?

Finally

Team Fortress 2

Microsoft Hates Europe??

I bought Braid last night

And i'm really enjoying it. Its very theraputic, and I love all the mario remix stuff. The story - while simple - is articulately composed and gives the game a harmonic underlying fluency.

My beef with braid is the price. 1200 Microsoft points. Apparently in the USA thats $15? Well, in England thats £12 I mindlessly forked out for Braid, and it wasnt until I stopped to think about it that I realised just how badly I have been ripped off. According to the conversion calculator on google; £12 = $24. After hearing GiantBombers complain about the $15 they would be scraping together, I cant help but feel this is slightly unfair.

I just effectively paid $24 for Braid. I am not a happy bunny.

Its frustrating because Braid is clearly a great game, and I have really enjoyed my time with it so far. I have fully completed worlds 2, 3 and 4 and i'm just starting 5. Its very hard to stop playing. But i'm worried that i'm moving through that game increasingly quickly (3 completed worlds in half a day?) - If I carry on like this i'm going to be done by tomorow. And whilst I hope the difficulty ramps up to a level where I am challenged for a long period of time i'm still concerned that I will never get my $24 worth of content.

Bill Gates must be sitting in his arm-chair and stroking a fluffy white cat. The Prick...
Bill Gates must be sitting in his arm-chair and stroking a fluffy white cat. The Prick...
So why has microsoft done this? Considering there is no hardware involved, surely there should'nt be any extra cost? Its not like it costs more to access something via the internet from somewhere further away. We get the same free demos, videos and updates. They are, again, taking the piss.

And its not just Braid

now i think about it points have always cost this much, which means Microsoft has been excessively ripping off europe for years. Which SUCKS.

The thing that irritates me is there is nothing I can do about this except complain vociferously to you guys. The casual Xbox360 market is unconcerned with the inner circle of bastardly game publishers and their schemes to thieve undeserved funds from their customers.

AND YES I m still going to buy Castle Crashers at full price the day its released. Like a mug.

I'm Playing Braid This Weekend

I really shouldnt be spending all my money on Braid, but fuck it - I downloaded the trial and that game looks like it could turn into something amazing later in the game. When is castle crashers being released, does anyone know the exact date?

London Games Festival 2008

2008
2008
Apparently there is this huge gaming thing called The London Games Festival which happens every year (in London apparently) and is all about "Video Games". This is news to me, but GOOD NEWS so i'm not complaining. The strange thing is I lived in London last year and I never heard about this so I guess I am just an epic FAIL.

Anyways I did some research and apparently - Its going to be awesome. According to Wikipedia all this stuff happened last year -

"
Highlights in 2007 included:
  • The Soho Project, that offered players a chance to take part in a mass ‘reality game’ on the streets of Soho, via the website
  • Games AV - a live concert, screening and club night features musicians, DJs, VJs, film-makers, animators and digital artists whose work has been shaped by video games culture.
  • Sense of Play 07 was a one-day symposium which looked at the future of game design featuring some of the most inspiring voices working in the industry today. Produced by Toby Barnes and Jon Weinbren the event in 2008 will look at how other creative disciplines are working with and around the games industry.
  • Skills Week. A week long series of seminars aimed at new entrants to the industry, students and people who are keen to break into the games industry
  • A drop-in Lounge at 01zero-one in Soho was open to all festival attendees, where you could hang out with the people behind the games, absorb the buzz of the festival, and enjoy the the ZeroGamer exhibition which featured “…games that play themselves, video documents of in-game performance, game engine experiments and challenging documentaries on gameplay.” "

That sounds amazing, and I am now super stoked. For me the Computer Games Industry was always happenening at places that were physically unreachable to me - USA, Tokyo, Lipzig, etc. This is my first real chance to see this stuff happening first-hand. LGF doesnt kick off till october 25th, a few months away, but i'm definately going to go check it out. If anyone else is planning on going let me know!

IN OTHER NEWS

I downloaded the Braid trial, but when I went to my XBLA blade it wasnt on my list of demos. Now I have to download it allover again. I will let you know if I ever get to play it... *UPDATE* Download finished, playing Braid now. Impressions coming soon =)

Watched the Olympics Opening Ceremony on HDTV and it blew me away. If I was being cynical I would point out that its just an elaborate way of hypnotising us into forgetting about the whole polluting the world thing, but visually it was a stunning acomplishment to watch. We British are completely fucked in 2012, there is no way we are going to be able to comete with that. I bet we end up just throwing out Led Zep and hoping for the best.
Mind you, that would still be awesome...

The GiantBomb Zombie Team

In yesterdays Bombcast Vinnie raised the important Issue of zombie teams. Seeing as a zombie holocaust is inevitable I think its important to allocate the team roles to the appropriate members of Giantbomb.

The Token Black Guy

Played By Jeff Gerstmann

Every zombie team needs a black dude. He will either be a Cop or a Gangster, and he will definately know how to use a gun. Contrary to popular belief, he will not be the first to die - although he will probably be killed in a slow and painful way.

The Porn Star

Played by Brad Shoemaker

The porn star has two jobs. Firstly to run around in a thong with a huge machinegun. Secondly to satisfy the other male survivors. The porn star isnt afraid of getting her hands dirty, and her survival skills will depend entirely on the size of her rack. If she looks good enough, she may even survive until the end.

The Geeky Guy

Played By Sweep

This dude reads comic books and plays extensive hours of counter strike - and as a result he knows what should be done, but lacks the charisma to do it. He will probably formulate an awesome survival plan and then promptly get eaten. Nobody will be upset after he is gone.

The Middle Eastern Dude

Played By Hamz

Everyone will assume this dude is a terrorist and that he therefore should be a zombie killing machine. After a while it will become aparent he is a dentist, with 2 kids he is determined to save. This guy will be the outcast of the team and will probly bring about the deaths of several other survivors through his actions.

The Fat Chick

Played By Lemon

The fat chick acts as zombie cannon fodder, offering her bulk as a human shield. Its an understandable survival tactic as she is unlikely to have any other uses within the team. She may also have a short (but very amusing) relationship with The Geeky Guy.

The Vietnam Veteran

Played By Ryan Davis

The vet will be missing a limb, but will compensate by being slightly insane and racially intollerant. He will not trust the Middle Eastern guy until later on when they will be forced to work together to survive. The vet's death is inevitable. He will go down fighting, probably with a shotgun.

The Asian Dude

Played By Why_So_Serious

This guy will be the wannabe gangsta, but will ultimately look like a tool. He will try desperately to impress the Token Black Guy, and will ultimately be the only member of the group to not sleep with the Porn Star. However over time he will learn not to be a jackass, and he may even survive.

The Gay Guy

Played By Lethal_Ki11ler

The Gay Guy will only declare his sexuality after the Zombie outbreak and will spend several episodes coming to terms with his confession. He will be shunned by the Vietnam Vet and the Electrician but will make friends with all the female members of the group. He will die, defenceless, mid-way through the survival effort.

The Electrician

Played By Joseppie

This guy will be a grease monkey called "Cooter" from Alabama. He will know how to fix up cars and will kill zombies using a large wrench. He will also play a harmonica and give names to his favorite zombies. Pet dog is optional. He will be mostly concerned with saving his own hide, but will also help the survivors build a flame thrower.

The Single Mom

Played By Vinny Caravella

The only definate survivor of the zombie outbreak, whoever she chooses to have sex with will ultimately be killed. She will have been traumatised watching her kids get eaten and as a result will be out for some zombie blastin' revenge. She will earn the respect of the other survivors by smashing heads with a crowbar, and will also act as the peacekeeper of the group. She may even have a background in first aid, if you are lucky...

Anyways thats the ultimate Zombie Team. Some of you may die, but hey - thats what happens after a Zombie Holocaust. Remember, its a team game. So long as one of you survives, your story will live on.
I would also like to add that the characters I chose were (mostly) randomly assigned. I picked people who I have seen frequently around the site, and I hope they are satisfied with the results. The Giant Bomb employees were included by defaul. If you have any complaints please send them to someone who has no eyes. The idea was to entertain, not to offend.

Anyways, remember. There's no "I" in the Giant Bomb Zombie Team!

XBOX LIVE stuff

XBOX LIVE STUFF

Ok so today I have been scanning XBLA for some juicy videos and stuff, and I found a few things I thought I would share:

Street Fighter 4 Gameplay Intro (E3 2008)
Ken is Hot Shit
Ken is Hot Shit
This is the first time I have been able to watch street fighter 4 in action and I have to say, what I'm seeing is very impressive. Street fighter 4 looks like an honest fighting game, and is obviously trying not to be anything more than that - a similar ethos to  the likes of Ninja Gaiden 2. Hopefully it will retain the balence between simplicity and depth - whilst taking full advantage of the great new aesthetic. That game looks beautiful, truely. I do not own any fighting games on my 360 yet, opting out of Soul Calibre IV in my anticippation of Street Fighter 4, and this video has simply made me more excited. There new special moves and revenge system look very fluent within the gameplay, I cant wait to master it and get online.

Too Human Demo
Its got potential...
Its got potential...
I was away in Mexico when this got released but here are some of my (late) impressions. Too Human has got a lot of potential. But its also got several flaws that I found very frustrating. Its a tough call, because Too Human is not like anything I have ever played before, and as a result I'm unfairly ranking it up alongside games to which it holds little contextual relationship. For a start, I want to be able to move and attack at the same time. At the moment when you swing your blade it brings Baldur to a standstil which can be very disruptive. Also I do not believe the camera is robust enough to allow the player the fluency which was intended whilst fighting. I have been excited about Too Human for a while, but now I have actually had a hands on experiance I have become more interested than excited. I want to know what the large-scale reaction is going to be, and how the game is going to hold up on Xbox Live. One to watch I think.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (Trial Version)
I was going to buy this at release but i'm kinda strapped for cash so for now I have to make do with the Demo.
Brain... melting...
Brain... melting...
The single player remains consistantly brilliant, it was the multiplayer that I was set to test. Me and my brother spent a lot of time taking it in turns to compete at the original Geometry Wars so we hopped into the two player modes and had a look. I'm very pleased with the way it has turned out, the muliplayer looks amazing - double the amount of flashes and explosions and bullets whizzing around making it a magnificent spectacle to watch and completely brain-melting to play. I have always been a huge fan of local multiplay and it has always been dissapointing to me that many games like Gears Of War can only go 2 player slitscreen and not 4. It is therefore heartwarming to see a great game like Geometry Wars embracing 4 player co-op with such poise and enthusiasm, demonstrated by the extensively different game modes. I am very impressed with this game and as soon as I have saved up enough pennies I am adding it to my collection.

IN OTHER NEWS

  • I updated my WoW subscription so I have been shooting around Azeroth again for the last couple of days. Its still just as much fun as it ever was, though a little overwhelming jumping into a level 60 character after not playing for over a year.
  • My brother ordered Medal Of Honour 2 for his Wii. Should be delivered here in a few days.
  • er... thats about it.

My Secret Identity

A few people have been posting pictures of themselves on their blogs, I guess to give us a shallow perception of what they are really like as human beings. I am going to jump on this bandwagon like no bandwagon has ever been jumped on before.

I look like this. Most of the time.
I look like this. Most of the time.

WHAT? All the cool kids were doing it...
