Games I Should Have Played in 2013

Every year there's a growing list of regret for me, as good games fall through the cracks and don't get any playtime. The following games all well up twinges of regret in my psyche as unloved children I should have devoted some time to this year. Cat's in the cradle with the silver spoon, as it were.

Ordering is based on the community game of the year rankings. Games that I had no chance of playing, such as The Last of Us and Gran Turismo 6, will not be included. I don't own a PS3, I don't want to own a PS3, so those kids are dead to me, Sophie.

List items

  • I'm not a huge fan of the Tomb Raider series, but I've heard too many good things about the remake. I think I could set aside my aversion to sneak-and-stab games long enough to enjoy this.

  • Every time someone tells me about the TV level and how awesome it is, I hate myself a little more for not playing DmC yet. I am terrible at these types of games -- I can't even string together a simple combo in Arkham Asylum -- but the style sounds utterly sick.

Yeah, I just said sick as a compliment. Whatever. You don't know me!

  • I was OK with passing this up, and then I saw a farting warrior during one of the Extra Life streams.

Someday. It's low on the priority list, but I'm going to have to play this sometime.

  • This might just be because of the Steam sale and the bits and pieces I've heard of the final boss fight. I doubt I'll ever get around to playing it.

Plus, that's some rad boxart over there. All blue and fancy with the orange cut. Yeeeeah.

  • I really don't know why I haven't gotten to Antichamber yet. It sounds amazing, and I'm a big fan of mindfuck puzzlers. Out of the top 5, this is the one I'm most likely to play and complete.

  • God damn if this doesn't look cool. It was fun to watch the demo at PAX as well. Slick art style, luchadors, and what appears to be a heavy Metroidvania influence? I haven't played much Metroid or Castlevania in my life, but I'll explore the shit out of anything involving luchadors.

  • I haven't played a single Far Cry game. This doesn't look like any Far Cry game. I am a damn fool.

Hopefully I'll get to this someday.

  • The last Battlefield game I played to any extent was 1942. I bought this on sale on Origin, and the only reason I haven't tried it is all the bugginess that afflicts its gameplay.

I need to know how many Jeeps it takes to knock down a skyscraper. No one will give me a straight answer on this. It used to take 1-2 Jeeps to down a tank in 1942.

  • Look, I have respect for myself as a human being. Part of that means not stabbing my soul with hopelessness every chance I get.

Still, I need to see what it's like to feel someday. I need my soul to feel.

  • I still haven't played Dead Rising 2. I loved Dead Rising 1. Fuck.

  • Yeah, maybe someday. I'm not too keen on this whole "Fairy Tales mixed in with modern reality" trend that everyone's riffing off of, but it's Telltale, and I played through Back to the Future with no regrets.

Might just skip this for more Walking Dead to remind myself that I'm a terrible person.

  • Man, I don't even know how this got here. I think people I know kept tweeting about it, and now I have to know what the fuck this is about.

Will likely be ignored for Binary Domain.

  • Shiiit, I have to know what all the Cthulhu stuff's about. Brad and the rest of Giant Bomb left me hanging.

I just recently started playing through Tomb Raider and I enjoy it, even though its hard to watch Lara get harmed in some of the ways that she does, let me know what you think if you'd like

Good luck completing Antichamber. The interconnected puzzles are all pretty good but knowing when you don't have the right tools are are just not solving the puzzle is HARD. I keep coming back to it and I don't think I have the patience to finish it.

To be clear, I already own Tomb Raider, DmC, Battlefield, Spelunky, Antichamber, and Guacamelee, I just haven't played them. This is the terrible thing Steam sales will do to a man.

DmC is sick. Totally sick. I don't think I'm great at those types of games either, but it doesn't take to long to get good at it. Even if you don't get good at it, it still looks awesome.

Going into Tomb Raider I had expected to not like it at all, since I really don't enjoy any other game in the franchise. Turns out I enjoyed it a lot and it was one of my favorites of the year.

Remember Me has some amazing muzak and pretty decent art direction, but not much else. Out of your list, I'd say DMC and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon should be at the top of your list. @slowbird is right, DMC's first level is meh, but it doesn't take long before the creativity of the level design ramps up something serious.

I wouldn't say Spelunky is full of soul stabbing hopelessness. It's more like soul filling hopefulness. Every time you start might be that epicly perfect run.

I must have short term memory loss. I played Tomb Raider last week and don't remember any of these shitty stealth sequences that @slowbird is talking about. I remember entering areas undetected, killing one or two enemies stealthily then getting discovered then it just becomes a regular cover based shooter.

I own Remember Me and haven't played it. I hope to get to it soon but it keeps getting pushed back by shiny new things.

I also need to know what was up with Magrunner... I'm even thinking of doing something crazy, like buying it instead of Gone Home or Rogue Legacy before the Steam sale is over as a result.

And as I somehow managed to actually beat Spelunky despite a lack of gaming skills, I can confirm it's really not on par with stabbing yourself in the soul. It's actually usually quite fair, though there certainly are rare situations where you're just fucked, and requires being cautious yet decisive. Hesitance, greed, and carelessness are what get you, and they're your fault, not the games.

Antichamber is fucking great. I just finished it a couple days ago. Get on that shit.

@slag: I have a wired controller, but my laptop setup isn't ideal for a gamepad combo. I'll have to tinker with my furniture and see if I can remedy that.

I hear that, I'm working on getting a better sitting situation for mine. Using a wired controller at my desk in my desk chair doesn't feel right to me.

but yeah if you can make it work without spending any money to do it, it's definitely worth the effort.

Guacamole is not good on burgers or other things! It's a goddamn fruit and it tastes bad in combination with salty meats! Fuck avocados!

also I got DMC free and can't be bothered to play it, Tomb Raider was cheap and thank god for that, and I played the demo of Blood Dragon and didn't want to buy it afterwards. I watched someone play Spelunky and said "nope" and I hate multiplayer shooters so Battlefield is out until they bring back the Bad Company characters. Antichamber looks like a puzzle game and I hate puzzles because I am not smart enough to solve them.

I'm playing through Rogue Legacy, and while it's certainly addictive, I'm not sure it would have made my top ten. Part of that is me playing on a keyboard rather than a gamepad.

There is a big difference with a game pad. I will say I enjoyed it immensely without one for the first 50 levels or so, but I probably added an average of 33% or so Gold to my runs once I attached ye olde 360 controller to the PC. Then it starts to feel really really good.

Tomb Raider surprised the hell out of me. I've mildly enjoyed some of the series. But this one really got its hooks into me. Not having to sneak around all the damn time was definitely an added bonus.

I've only played three of these but I can safely say that you don't need to play any of them, and here's a list of reasons why (and just some general nonsense that isn't true):

tomb raider has shitty stealth sequences

dmc's first level is meh

rogue legacy is for chumps who like dying a lot

metal gear rising, more like metal gear falling

antichamber: motion sickness simulator

guacamelee tastes even worse than guacamole

far cry 3 blood dragon's shooting is a real DRAG ON my mental health

battlefield 4? you could get the same experience from installing an experimental fork of linux (lots of crashes)

spelunky is just one mind-numbing death corridor after another

dead rising, more like dead falling (OH MY GOD HE USED THE SAME AWFUL JOKE TWICE WHAT AN ASSHOLE)

wolf among us, yeah i guess it's probably alright if you like shitty art design and also werewolves are stupid

remember me? nobody will remember this game

magrunner dark pulse sounds like a fucking assisted suicide facility

You're in luck! Tomb Raider is coming out on the Xbox One next month. You should get that. Also, PLAY BLOOD DRAGON. OH MY GOD. IT'S AWESOME.

Remember Me is supposed to be alright, but it's not on PS+ like DMC (or Binary Domain), everyone should play DMC in January.

I'd make fun of you for this list, but the only one I've played is Rogue Legacy. I can even toss in Bioshock: Infinite and The Last of Us (well, I played 5 minutes of it).
