@Sunjammer: practically? a combat zone is probably not the best place for it.
if you want theory, because expressing sexuality seems to be exclusively assigned to female characters. in a vacuum, a woman character dressing up in a chain mail bikini because "damnit, i look good in this and it's my time to shine!" wouldn't be a big deal, but that's not how character design in the game industry works.
do you think that agent in syndicate (which, personally, i don't think looks that bad but w/e) was made that way because the designer thought that's how the character would express herself or because that's what they thought players would like to see? even if it did fit the character, it's not as if she just popped out of the aether. somebody at starbreeze had to come up with and develop "female agents that loves fighting and loves looking good while doing it" character. it's not as if this is based on real people and the story will just fall apart without "sexy cyberpunk agent". i suppose it comes down to whether or not you believe developers make characters like this due to a progressive, pro-sex feminist agenda or because "boobies look nice and gamers love boobies." frankly, i know what side i am leaning towards.
i look down on sexuality in my bideo games because often times it comes across as juvenile and exploitative in the vast majority of cases. i don't get the impression these characters are dress the way they are through some imagined sense of agency they possess. i get the impression that the designers want to look at pretty girls and think the player does too. to bring it to that girl in bioshock (another thing people are in a tizzy about, i guess i didn't get the memo), what does the corset add to the character or tell us about her? would we really lose anything if she didn't have it? she is designed like that to appeal to player, not because she thought a corset would look nice during her grand escape.
at best, sexuality in games is superfluous and adds nothing to the character or story, and, at worst, is actively exploitative and harmful. i don't see why it has to be there and i don't trust game designers to handle it in a mature and even-handed fashion.
tl;dr: i actually don't care about the character design in either syndicate or bioshock infinite because both those games are going to be boring and terrible and nobody is gonna read all these words anyways.
p.s. referring to critics as "white knight" that only argue this because they think it will get them laid is dumb as hell and only serves make gamers look like a bunch of babbys that would rather toss out ad hominems then actually scrutinize their childish hobby even just a little bit. cut it out. tia :)
