Shinobi, in my opinion, was rougher than its sequel, just because of this evil boss with all the idols that push you into the electrical field. People say that's easy, but without the gun it damn well isn't! :)
R-Type was pretty neat. I learned recently that the SMS version has a level no other version of the game does! I think we got Hang On with the system, but I didn't like it so much. Guess my premier racing game around that time would either be Pole Position II for the 7800. Later, Super Monaco GP and Road Rash II became my bar-none favorite racers.
