Game OST of the week - Wind Waker - Ocean

There are many great games out there with fantastic OST's. Each week (when I can remember to) I'll post about one song from an OST that I think deserves attention.

This week I present to you Ocean, from The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker. It's no secret that Wind Waker is my favourite Zelda game. I've played pretty much all the Zelda games, minus the CDi triumphs, and for me none of them capture the sense of adventure as well as Wind Waker.

The music in the game is, as with most Zelda games, fantastic. I believe the audio jump from the N64's Ocarina Of time to this Gamecube title was just as impressive as the brilliant cell shading.

Ocean is the track that plays when you're sailing from island to island. At times this can become monotonous and frustrating, but somehow Ocean manages to keep you going, and converts a potentially boring portion of the game into an ambitious exciting and grand voyage into the unknown. The beat matches the rhythm of the sea, and the odd crashing symbol fits the turning of the waves perfectly. All of this is done whilst keeping the melody extremely close to the Zelda theme, making it feel familiar yet new at the same time.

I actually really enjoyed the sailing sections, it was new and different, the colours were bright and bold and the music adventurous. It's a track that has always stuck in my mind, and that can only be a good thing.

Take a listen, and tell me what you think.

This is one of my favorite videogame tracks. It's the sole reason I didnt hate collecting the tri-force pieces like everyone else seemed to, I could literally listen to this for days on end.

I always loved this song, it sorta helped fit my mood that I was setting out to discover something new.  Went really well with the blustering wind and bounding waves :)

I have an old EGM that stated there was a Wind Waker 2 in the works for the GameCube. I wonder what happened to it? I sometimes think it  turned into the Phantom Hourglass? Here's an old IGN article from 2004. http://cube.ign.com/articles/501/501735p1.html

Love it, I like it's peppy nature.

I really want another WW, a much larger and diverse Zelda, not the same old themes all the time.

I can see why it does that. It did gain criticism for the sailing to and fro. Luckily for me, it only brings back good memories. Also, I was playing it when it was released inbetween my end of school exams, and I did pretty well.

As much as I liked The Wind Waker, this song brings back some bad memories. When I first set sail it was awesome, plus the song, but by the end of the game going to-and-fro the song became grating for me.

Love this song and the game in general. It's possibly my favorite Legend of Zelda game, but choosing your favorite LoZ game is like a parent trying to decide which child they love more.

I love that song.  It has to be my favorite song in the game.

EDIT:  Also, I pretty much agree with everything you said.  Wind Waker also has to be my favorite Zelda game, or tied with A Link To The Past.

Hyrule Field is a classic, there's no doubt about that. Interestingly both Ocean and Hyrule Field use the rapping drums in a very similary way throughout the track.

Well, I wish the track started with the sun rising. When the sun rises on the sea, you almost think that the music from the field in Ocarina of Time is going to play... but NO! You get this instead.
