• The name Xbox 3 is shorter than the current name, matching it's slimmed-down form factor. 
• It actually will be the 3rd iteration of the external device, albeit very similar internally 
• The Name shares a relativity to the original name 360, helping drive the notion that the 360 and 3 will run the same games and devices, just one is newer!

It makes sense but they probably won't do it since it would probably create too much confusion especially if it's just a slimmed down 360.

Instead of XBOX call it the X cubed because it will have an X and a 3 in the logo and will be the spiritual successor the the gamecube which was awesome.

No dice. I wouldn't expect a NEW new Playstation or Xbox for at least 5-7 years.   It will be safe to call the Xbox 360 Slim the Xbox 3 and still be ready to compete against a PS4 with ACTUALLY NEW hardware in 5-7 years time. "

Half a turn = not a full upgrade... hmm, this makes some sense, that means they won't use it! I think it should be called the 360i, Nintendo gets to do it after all. I work in retail and it is already hard enough to explain the differences between the two 360's available to uninformed customers along with the different iterations of the PS3; also, explaining why only some PS3's play PS2 games is a pain. The system needs to keep the same name.

Gamebox 720

I quite like this idea, and I think it makes sense to name it the Xbox 3 so that the Xbox 4 can be launched around the same time as the PS4.  After all, the main reason they went with 360 was so it didn't sound like an infererior machine.  The only issue being that many may assume it is an entirely new system...  Though that seems to be what they're going for with the release of Natal.

They should make a handheld device called the Xbox 180.

You know, that actually isn't a bad idea. While it technically isn't the third generation Xbox, they could probably get away with it, if they spun it the right way. If they decide to include Natal with it, it would be even easier to pull off. It would then also be easier for them to naming the true next generation Xbox, since they could then just call it Xbox 4. 
 
The downside, of course, is that it could lead to some serious confusion among consumers. Avoiding this would be key, as it could turn people off from the brand entirely if not handled carefully. 
 
All considered, while I really like the idea, I think it would be too much of a marketing and PR hassle for Microsoft to pull off effectively. My guess is they'll just go with something like Xbox 360 Slim, as shitty as that sounds.

They kind of boned themselves with the 360 name. The concept of needing 3 in the name so that it sounded just as marketable as the PS "3" was pretty awful, but now they have to work their way out of it. However, if they do have a slim version on the way there is no need to change the name. They're doing a reasonably good job bringing down the number of SKUs and so it wouldn't surprise me to see another crop up. 
 
I'd just have two three SKUs. The 120gb, a 240gb, and a slim. Maybe just call it 360 Slim and not have different names for the 120 and 240.
 
Doing that would mean dropping the price they charge for their HDDs though....which would probably be nice.

XXX box

When I saw the forum post on GB's front page I was like "This guy is an idiot". Then I read this, and it actually sorta makes sense. This way Microsoft could just put out an xbox 4, while xbox 3 just doesnt seem like a whole new console because 360 already has a 3 in it and xbox 3 would just be a shorter version of that name much like the xbox 3 would be a "shorter" console. It actually makes sense. That being said, I doubt it will happen.

They don't need numbers, they'll probably just give it a dumb name like 'xbox freedom'.

Natal will become Natural.  The new console bundle will be called Xbox Natural.
