Drakan: The Ancients' Gates... Do you remember playing this game?

I remember playing this game when it came out. The combat had lock-on-targeting much like Zelda, but you could also fly and fight on a dragon. I remember the world being open and the RPG elements, but much of the game is lost to me now.

I started thinking about this game while playing Dragon Age: Origins. I kept thinking, "Did I not play a game with dragons in it a long time ago, and you could fly on one too?" After a little research, I found Drakan: The Ancients' Gates released on the PS2 in 2002.

The game was developed by Surreal Software makers of The Suffering franchise and the not yet released This Is Vegas. They're owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment after being bought and sold a couple of times.

I would like to see another Drakan game. What I do remember from The Ancients' Gates is quite good. I thought it looked cool and played well. Would you be up for a new game in the series?

Here's some screens I uploaded to help jog your memory.

My forum stats are gone.

Fuck this GiantBomb. Click on forums in your profile page and see what happens. I want my stats back. Roll back bitches. They're all gone, everything I made, madness as it was, I enjoyed them all. I now only have my forum feed... I hate it.

For those that don't understand.

When you used to click on your "forums" tab on your "profile", you would get a page of all the topics you had posted to the forums in list form. There were other tabs as well. My main concern is the loss of information from the forum topics I had created and the ability to check on the conversations from them. I'm at a loss with this update.

Before, I could view all topics I had created on the forums, the views, and the comment count. That's all gone.

Bring back, bring back, bring back my old forums tab to me, to me.

My Wife's New Laptop... A gamer's story.

It came as a gift from my Wife's mother. At first, it was a Gateway. My wife said, "too big" and having no say in the matter, a Toshiba Satellite then came to be known in the house.

I laughed at its specs, little loser. 4500MHD integrated graphics...please. I have no need for such a puny machine. I can't play video games on it, not good ones.

A few more bones and I could have had a gaming laptop.
A few more bones and I could have had a gaming laptop.

Well, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. My aging PC spoke to me. "I only have an 80 gb hard drive. What games do I currently have installed?" Well, Dragon Age: Origins, The Witcher, Deus Ex, Morrowind and Team Fortress 2 on Steam. Wait, oh I get it, I have a back catalog of video games for the PC that I don't have room for. The laptop has a 500 gb hard drive... curious.

I then tried Pirates! Live the Life on my wife's laptop, we share, so I can use it too. Nothing special to note other than it works.

I then installed Max Payne 2. The first thing I noticed is that it supported the laptop's native resolution, 1366 by 768. That's cool. I cranked the graphics up, I crank them up and then work my way down, and it worked like a charm. I had never finished Max Payne 2, so my mind about this piece of hardware is changing.

I now think about other old games I have that could use some new love.

Games I own that should run on my Wife's laptop.

I might try a few more, but this is a pretty good list and that's not counting Max Payne 2.

1. Grim Fandango

How about that.

2. Deus Ex

Why not? The laptop has 500gb of memory.

3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Sure.

4. The Longest Journey

Gotcha.

5. No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way

Haven't seen you in a while.

6. Sid Meier's SimGolf

Where's my sequel?

7. Beyond Good & Evil

A good one.

8. Medieval: Total War

A pretty old game, should play on the laptop.

9. NASCAR Racing 2002 Season

Not as good as 2003, but cool none the less.

10. MVP Baseball 2005

One of the best ever.

11. Madden NFL 2005

I haven't played a Madden game in a while. Roster sucks, but who cares. Maybe there's a mod.

All is forgiven little laptop, all is forgiven. Game on.

Thanks for reading.

Have you noticed some people can't play the Wii... ?

Have you noticed that some people just can't play with motion controls or use the IR pointer in Wii games?

When I first got the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in my hands, it just felt natural. Motion controls also came easy to me. Pointing with the IR is yet another easy task. Everyone that's come into my home, well that's another story.

Wii Sports Resort most people are fine. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 some get it, some don't. Games where you have to shoot or have to point at the screen, oh my, it's all over the place and most give up in 5 minutes. They do it different than me in these games, trying to actually point the Wii Remote at the TV by holding their arm up, much like a TV remote. I keep my arm down, relaxed, kind of like pulling a pistol in a western duel. I could see pointing if you have a gun peripheral, but otherwise, keep it down. I sit while playing games like this, arm relaxed, game on.

I've also noticed that a lot of reviews can go from great controls to bad controls for the same game on the Wii. The Wii usually has the largest margin of positive/negative opinions in reviews too.

I've noticed this with many games. Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces reviews were all over the place, while researching a purchase or not, conscerning the controls. I really don't think I would have a problem with the default controls, so I might still purchase. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is one that I did play and had no problems with the controls. I thought they were great actually. But again, the reviews were all over the place.

It's true though, some people just can't do it. Or do they wish not to learn? They can't be forced, so I guess the Wii will continue to be the most polarizing console on the market. If they had to play with motion, IR and or the Wii,  I'm sure that some dual analog controllers would have to be pried from a gamer's cold, dead hands, same for keyboard and mouse heroes.

My future is golden, the golden age of motion controls. We'll see if it's a fad or not and if it will it last.

When a game leaves you...

at a loss, that's when you feel bad. The grievance of a game's love lost is the worst. I can't stand it. I work hard to not let it happen. I want good games for the good of the game to last forever, but there are good games gone great that lose me, having been played.

Can I play them again?

DOA in DAO... Easy Button Time

Dragon Age: Origins PC version.

Well, I finally hit the wall. Too many times dead for me, had to go the easy route. I'm still loving it. The story is what matters most.

I was starting to see this way too often.

Dragon Age: Origins... Impressions.

This is for the PC version.

Okay, first and foremost, to the people comparing this game to The Witcher, stop it, that's like comparing Call of Duty 2 to Brothers in Arms, plus the combat in The Witcher is closer to Diablo than this game, and this game ain't no click fest. Let's move on.

I'm a level 6 male human rogue named Claudian. I'm about 8 hours in and just finished lighting a signal in a tower. I'm playing on normal difficulty.

Claudian and Skinner ready for battle.
Claudian and Skinner ready for battle.

The story for my character is pretty decent, but I'm barely into the game, so it's slow developing when it comes to my party. You usually run with four party members. The game does start off with a bang, betrayal, death, sacrifice and then begins your journey against the evil that besieges the land. The non-playable battle scenes that are depicted are really cool and give the game a large scope, plus, they're bloody as hell.

Combat, oh boy the combat, it's a labor of love. If you try and go all Leroy Jenkins in this game, you will fail. I haven't really grasped the Party A.I. Tactics sub-menu, so I mostly rely on micromanagement of each party member. That means I pause the game often. You have to think about each skirmish and how you use each party member. You have to use their strengths and hide their weakness such as keeping the Mage at a distance and breaking out the range shots before going in for close combat. When and how to use Mage attacks effectively plays a major role, normal difficulty allows for friendly fire and that means your ass is on fire when in the line of fire. I find myself constantly pausing the game looking for a tactical advantage, flanking is your friend. I did have a boss battle in the tower, and it did not like my Mage. He went after him with a vengeance. After my whole party died twice, I finally persevered on my third try. It was cool as hell, because I didn't expect my character to do what he did when the deed was done.

 Die motherfucker, die!!!
 Die motherfucker, die!!!

As I said, I really haven't gotten into the meat of the game, but I'm liking it. The strategy and tactics involved in combat is something I've never dealt with before in a video game, well, except for RTS games. It's not easy, but if you pause the game and think about it, you will survive. I'm sure there will be heated battles where I die too many times for my liking, but that just means... I'm doing it wrong.

Leveling up and finding stuff is all standard in these types of games, but you still have to wrap your head around how it works in any new game of this nature.

The controls work fine, and the game runs really well on my aging PC. I'm a happy camper, so... happy gaming.

Claudian out, thanks for reading.
