Cogzwell's GOTY 2014

List items

  • This game had me even before I realized I had been playing it for ten hours straight. I have always loved the power fantasy of managing a civilization but always found civilization games too repetitive and tedious. Endless Legend has the character, the presentation, and intricate systems, and even the music of a game I want to lord over for hours on end. There are other games on this list I was happy to be done with so I could go back to playing this game.

  • To me Bastion was nearly a perfect experience, Transistor tries to be so much more than Bastion was, and it hits more than it misses. The art style is arguably my favorite of any game ever and I am a fan of its mysterious storytelling. Then there's the combat, an arpg remix of vats mixed with a super complex ability system makes the combat feel both actiony and puzzling.

  • Games began with hitting a ball back and forth, look how far we've come. I am a glutton for games that are fast and chaotic, and Lethal League is some of the most fun i've had with local multiplayer. When the soundtrack kicks in and the ball starts flying so fast the moon blots out the sun, I just go to pieces.

  • Following the trend of the strong local multiplayer this year has had. Nidhogg was a long time coming but was a pleasure to have at party/on any live stream. It's hectic music, desperate chases, and Out of This World style graphics cements in my mind that fencing is actually cool.

  • Although not an entirely new title, I'm happy to say that all the things they've added to Binding of Isaac makes the remake easily worth it. The new physics and effects are enough to make the game feel brand new and it keeps all of the things that made the original so compelling, if not seem a little immature.

  • While there are many things about Inquisition that are unbelievably poorly handled and disappointing. It has at its roots all of the systems I would want for a good Dragon Age follow up. While the story isn't any worse than the rest of the Dragon Age games, the way its presented feels very hollow. But overall the living world with likable characters kept me invested and enjoying myself (mostly I guess). And even though the controls for mouse and keyboard are awful, the improved gamepad controls have really come a long way.

  • Amazing visuals paired with satisfying puzzles, the level design of Monument Valley is serene and super pleasing.

  • Nordic styled settings have always spoken to me, and the Banner Sagas devotion to presenting it in their own way pays off. While the tactical gameplay is decent enough, the game really shines in regards to its oregon trail esque decision making. The Banner Saga meets that perfect mix of human intrigue and hopelessness that makes it so grabbing and serious.

  • I couldn't really care about adventure games, but I just found myself really enjoying Broken Age's first act. The visual style is very well realized, the voice acting is phenomenal, and the story is very intriguing to say the least.

  • It's just the sorta jokey nonsense a lot of games aren't willing to do and it does it quite well. While not much of the game, overall I really wish more games just did what it did, be a fun thing for a day.
