Initially, I was trying it on my Wii, which has occasionally had disk reading issues. However, it played other games fine. I had the same idea, and switched over to my Gamecube, which is when it started displaying the opening logos, but it still stops on the opening cutscene.

, : Thanks for the advice, I'll look up those methods and pick one later (I have a suspicion that they might be incompatible with each other).

Damn, I guess if I don't find a solution in two weeks I have a backup plan.

Thanks for the info on the disk doctor, I live in Philadelphia so LA's a little out of my way. Do you happen to know what they use?

I'm trying to play an old Gamecube game (Custom Robo if it matters), but I'm having trouble with the disk. I've tried the "toothpaste method" several times, and now the game loads the opening logos, but produces an error when the opening cutscene would usually start.

My question to you guy is: Should I

  1. Buy one of those "Disk Doctor" things they used to sell at Blockbuster (I have other games this could be useful for).
  2. Buy a new copy of the game (looks like it'd run me about $20).
  3. Curl up in the corner and cry because one of my favorite games no longer works.

Really? I guess I never realized that there was that kind of market. I still wish that Amazon didn't default to putting that price front and center, it seems to me that most people searching for that kind of game would be looking for it used (I certainly am).

So I was looking in to buying some old SNES games to expand my library, when I noticed some weird stuff going on with the pricing on Amazon. It seems like sellers are

  1. Saying they are selling a new copy of 20-ish year old games, presumably so their price comes up first.
  2. Jacking up the price to ridiculous levels--for example, Super Mario World was listed for $400 as of this writing.

Has anyone else noticed this? Has this been happening for a while and I just noticed now or something? It's basically strait-up scamming.

FFVI and XII focus largely on adult stories. Earthbound and Mother 3 star children, and in the latter's case has adult protagonists as well. Xenogears stars adults as well, but if your motivations stem from what I think they do it'll be way too Japanese. I'd also like to say that the Persona series has very well written and mature characters, and might be in line with what you're looking for more than something like Lost Odyssey, which has very immature characters. (Don't get me started on FF XIII).

+1 to AAI2, Phoenix Wright vs Layton, Mother 3, and Bravely Default.

I'm probably unique in wanting these, but I'd really like to play the first three Custom Robo games in English.

I had a similar issue a while ago, on both my Linux and Windows boots, turned out the graphics card was fried. Also, similar issues have occurred for me when the cable leading from whatever hard drive the OS is on to the motherboard is loose, so check your cables.
