Looking for Anime Suggestions & Parasite Eve

First off, let me just say that I'm asking for Anime suggestions. If you can't contribute to the topic, then please don't post anything. If you do post something stupid, I will not dignify it with a response. I know half more than half of the community here are just "followers" and will say something because they think they're being clever.
Ok, now that that is out of the way, let us continue.

I'm in need of some help with picking a new Anime to watch. I've been in an Anime mood lately (probably because of BlazBlue and Persona). I just finished Angel Beats (loved it) and don't know what to watch next. (I only got the idea to watch Angel Beats because I saw a lot of wallpapers of it on wallbase.net)
I will watch mostly anything... mostly.

Currently watching:

  • Death Note

Here are the Anime that I have seen already, so you can get an idea of my tastes:
  • .hack://SIGN
  • Elfen Lied
  • Gantz
  • Devil May Cry
  • Chobits
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Code Geass
  • Angel Beats!
  • Howl's Moving Castle
  • Gunbuster 1&2
  • Wolf's Rain
  • Clannad/ Clannad After Story

And that about covers all the ones I've seen. I've seen them all in their entirety and loved them. It also helps if the show has awesome music, such as .hack://SIGN, Angel Beats, and Ghost in the Shell. I already got a hold of both Wolfs Rain and Cowboy Bebop solely for the fact that Yoko Kanno does music for both shows.

With that, there are some that I don't really want to watch due to their length. Shows such as the Dragon Ball series and Naruto series. I prefer my Anime to be around 2-3 seasons.

There are some that I have been thinking about watching, and they include Clannad, the rest of the .hack:// series, and others. But would rather hear someone's opinion on them first, so I don't end up wasting my time. (Even though I won't enjoy something, I will see it through to the end)

Kind of unrelated, but since Third Birthday was announced for the PSP, my interest in the series has been growing. Unfortunately I never played any games in the Parasite Eve series, and don't really know what any of them are about. Having said that, does anyone know a good Lets-Play or Long-Play of the two games. I've seen a number of them on youtube, but I don't want to start watching a lets play with a crappy narrator. I've only seen Let's Plays from Kikoskia. I want to watch them because I doubt PSN will release the originals any time soon, and I don't really have the time to hunt them down and play them. My backlog is large enough as it is.

Thanks for any and all help. And if you're here to call me a jerk, I won't fight ya. My bad for enjoying Animes more than I do RealityTV and other American shows.

 ~! An Update.
I'm on episode 19 of Clannad and I gotta say I'm really enjoying it. Sure it isn't packed with crazy action scenes and a terribly interesting plot. But the mood of the show is just such a nice refreshing change compared to the previous shows I have watched.
Not surprisingly, Clannad and Angel Beats! are very similar. (Same director I believe) I've learned from watching these shows that when the protagonist meets one on one with another character from the show, to prepare for a horribly sad scene and grab the tissue box (Not that I bawl that much to actually require tissues, just saying that to illustrate a point. Although episode 9 and 14 of Clannad did have me in tears. In Angel Beats... it was nearly every one on one confession)

Anyway, I shall keep on trekking through it, soaking up every last second. It really is a beautiful show.

~!
Just finished the first season of Clannad... so beautiful and cheerful. I like shows that end that way. I'm all warm and fuzzy inside. Time to watch the After Stories. I hope it keeps its charm.

 ~!
I just finished watching all of the Clannad series. Now I need a hug.
No joke, from episode 18 and on in After Story I was in tears. Without a doubt, Clannad is my favorite anime series at the moment. It had such an impact on me. Not just emotionally, but physically as well.
I feel like turning over a new leaf in my life after watching the hardships the cast had to endure. I know it was just a show, and it may be silly to think such things. But I was truly touched.
I know it might just be an after-effect of watching a really good show, and that I may forget about how I felt while I was watching it. That's why I'm adding Clannad related images to my shuffling wallpapers. So when I see them, I can remember. Cheesy, I know, but I really don't care.
I also plan on re-watching this show, most definitely.

Proof that a show doesn't need over-the-top action, nudity, or gore to be interesting or entertaining.
Thanks to everyone who recommended Clannad to me.

Now I'm off to find the soundtrack!

I just thought I would mention that I found a used copy of both Parasite Eve 1&2 at my local Game Over Games. I told myself I wouldn't play it until I cleared up some of my backlog.
But I couldn't resist putting in the first disc of PE1 to see if it ran properly... now I'm hooked.

How the eff am I suppose to manage this, classes, Valkyria Chronicles 2, and Persona 3P?! Arggghhhh

I'd say maybe give it a go on either one of these:

Ergo Proxy
Gankutsuou
Monster
Fullmetal Alchemist
Last EXILE
Requiem for the Phantom
Death Note

Hope that helps :)

One more thing Clannad related. Do yall recommend checking out the Clannad Visual Novel?

Now I'm off to find the soundtrack! Time for the long-awaited Death Note. You guys have really been building up the hype for this one.

Welp! I just finished Cowboy Bebop. I enjoyed it to say the least. The characters were awesome, Ed was by far my favorite. Not really much of a story. But who needs a story when you got good characters. Thats what my Interactive Writing teacher, Daniel Erickson, always says. The ending kinda bummed me out though.
Still a good show. Didn't get emotional about anything though. The universe it took place in I thought was neat. Would like to see more of it... Anyone recommend the movie? I read it takes place during the series, and doesn't tie up any loose ends.

Also, I finished watching Gunbuster 1&2, as well as Wolf's Rain (was recommended to me by a friend). I liked how Gunbuster 2 ended with relation to the first Gunbuster.
As for Wolf's Rain...  the ending was a bit of a downer.
But the show was still pretty good. And the music was fantastic. Yoko never seems to disappoint.

Not including the giant list of shows Wibblewozzer provided, there have been 95+ anime series/movies suggested to me. That's a lot of Anime.

The most suggested seems to be Death Note. Next I think is BECK, Ouran Highschool Host Club, followed by Samurai Champloo and FMA. I highly doubt my talllying is correct, but without a doubt, Death Note has been the most recommended show.
Now I just need to figure out how to filter through all these.

Right now I'm watching Bebop, after that I think is Gunbuster 1&2, then Clannad, then Death Note (got a friend to agree to watch it with me).

Lotta shows to look forward to... a lot. And Fry's didn't have Casshern, argh. I wanted to watch that tonight. Guess I'll have to order it online. Should be eye-sex in blue-Ray. Mmmmmm

@skywave: Are the two shows connected in any way? Other than title.
In other words, would I need to watch the first to get a better understanding of the second one. I usually don't like skipping things in a series.
I hate the feeling of missing out on something.

the first gunbuster is amazing, not so much a fan of the second, but its not bad. Oh and if we are talking about anime with good music there is one track in the original gunbuster that is amazing and really sad, especially if you know the context.

Is there an English version of it? If so, does it use the same voice cast? I always find it jarring and hard to connect to the show when I see a beloved character with a different voice.
The ending better have the same mood as the game. I was glad the game ended on a happy note.

@ryoma122: Oh thanks for reminding me. I've seen the DMC anime as well, because that is yet another series I'm obsessed with.
Also, I'm a HUGE fan of Valkyria Chronicles... the game. How is the show compared to the plot of the game? I remember watching the first couple of episodes. What does it offer that the show does not? And more importantly, is Freesia in it?

Casshern is epic.  I won't say it doesn't have a slow part & isn't just the product of crazy Japanese people in the end [btw you will prob have to watch it all twice] but as a martial arts movie alone it is in a high-style echelon all-its-own.  I can only somewhat compare it to Speed Racer, with the seamless mixture of live action actors & completely computer generated environments.  I just hope you have a big tv you can sit really close to.

This anime makes me cry with its awesomeness.  It's probably one of THE best anime series I've ever seen, it only comes *close* to Evangelion because they are both Gainax anime as well as being directed by Hideaki Anno [my fave].  Little girls in giant robots.... in space... that was all they had to tell me..... Gunbuster 2 - only 6 episodes, it's kind of underground but missing it is unacceptable.

ahem...

Trailer spam... here's the creditless opening to Vandread... I never finished it because I was poor but I've always regretted it.  "Set in a universe where humans have colonized the galaxy, and in one star system, men and women are completely segregated (on completely different planets: Mejere by the women, Taraak by the men) causing the gender war to be more than just a metaphor."  Quirky, comical, inevitable love-triangles, space battles, giant robots... HOW can you go wrong...

@ESREVER:  if you like Yoko kanno then i would recommend watching The Vision of Escaflowne which has great music and is a unique fusion of shojo and shonen. It also has a really good dub that i would put up there in quality with Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex.  My favorite anime is Trigun and i think pretty much anyone should do themselves a favor and watch that series (has an amazing dub, yay 4 Johnny Young Bosch).

Another thing really worth watching is Mushishi. It got a really amazing vibe. Think the one-off episodes of the x-files but not horror/suspense. It has this almost zen vibe with an art style reminiscent of miyazaki at times.

Also, Macross Plus is an oav series with music by yoko kanno. Its got an interesting plot and characters with some really memorable music. Definitely worth seeing.

@Wibblewozzer:  Wow, thanks for taking the time and writing that detailed suggestion. I'll keep that list bookmarked for future reference.
@PenguinDust:  Romance in my Sci-fi is good for me, so I'll be giving Eureka Seven a look-see. As well as the others you have mentioned.
@Izzyjam: That was a super bizarre opening. I'm at a loss for words really.

I'm getting a lot of shows thrown at me, thank you all for your wonderful suggestions.

Now I just need to figure out what order I'm going to be watching these in... Sounds like Clannad, Death Note, BECK, and Darker than Black are a must. Monster sounds interesting, a little long for my tastes, but I might have to suck it up and endure.

Honey and Clover, if you're up for something genuine and heartfelt. It's got a more female-oriented demographic though... not that there's anything wrong with that >_>
At least have a look at the season 1 opening. Best opening in the history of openings since openings ever opened.

This, I agree with. If you're interested in Nausicaä, read the manga -- it's fantastic. The movie, on the other hand, is mediocre through and through.

@ESREVER:  Castle in the Sky I would actually highly recommend, but Nausicaa was just unbelievably dull and the theme is all environmentalist and it just didn't appeal to me. And you MUST watch Death Note...words can't describe it. In order my top 3 Miyazaki films would be Spirited Away at the top followed by My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo.

"  ...I'll also suggest: School Rumble..."

I recently discovered School Rumble and fell in love with the charm of this "slice-of-life" romantic comedy.  It's humorous, endearing, quirky at times, and has a story which develops over the course of its two 26 episode each seasons.  There are also a handful of OVAs (original video animation) that sandwich themselves into the story.  I've been blogging about it recently over on Anime Vice. Link.

Since you liked Chobits, I'm going to assume you don't mind a little romance in your sci-fi.  Therefore I am going to suggest you take a look at Eureka Seven.  This is one of my absolute favorites these days.  It's the story of a young boy who meets a weird girl who pilots an unusual giant robot.  It's very emotional at times, but also mixes up well with the action.  There are 50 episodes and a movie which collects and alters the series into something similar but different.  This is one of those that made me a bit teary.

One that doesn't get as much attention I think as it deserves is Shin Mazinger Shougeki Z-Hen.  It's just a wild crazy hyper active action series updating a classic giant robot character from the late 70's.  There are 26 episodes of this show, but watch the first and if your heart hasn't exploded check out the rest of the series.

I always recommendLast Exile, Martian Successor Nadesico and Samurai Champloo.  Speaking of samurais, I doubt you'll be disappointed by Rurouni Kenshin.  This is an anime about an gifted swordsman set in the Meiji Period (late 19th century) in Japan.   There are 95 episodes in this show.  It's very serial in nature but the action and complications of the plot are nicely broken up by comic side stories.

For great music in great anime, make sure to take a look (and listen) toBlue Submarine No. 6, Read or Die the TV and FLCL (Fooly Cooly).  Black Lagoon also has some pretty good music and a lot of action, although I found the story to be depressing.  Lots of regular anime fans like it a lot though, so you might want to take a look at it.  It's 24 episodes and the third season is slowly still coming out in Japan.

Kino's Journey, Mushishi and Baccano! are fantastic. Canaan's pretty good too, it starts off with a lot of over the top action and then progressively gets more fucked up. Darker than Black is a great action / violence series, just pretend the second season doesn't exist.

Paprika: is a must
Kiki's delivery service
The girl who leapt through time

I'd second a lot of other previous suggestions too and as a series I quite liked Hellsing.

I know I'm generally a stranger and you can't really base your tastes off of mine but for a few years I kept a record of shows I watched and some brief thoughts on them for some other guys at a message board I frequent. Feel free to peruse it and if it looks like we have enough similar tastes on shows you've liked I'd suggest you check out others I speak highly of: The List. One thing to keep in mind is that those entries were occasionally chronologically written based on when I watched them. So while I thought Chobits was the bee's knees when I first watched it after having seen fifty other shows watching something like that again wouldn't be nearly as entertaining to me. I also haven't updated it now for a year or two. I largely haven't watched much aside from maybe three or four shows that aren't listed but don't expect anything too new.

I just love how that list makes me look like a huge anime nerd. Heh. Ever decide you wanted to learn more about some topic so you just jumped straight into it? That's how anime was for me for a couple years. I felt like I needed to learn more shows because I was always lost when friends talked about Cowboy Bebop. And now I've seen more than anyone I personally know.

But back to you, if you want the sort of show that's going to get you all emotional and something like Clannad is appealing I'll list a few others: Kanon (only familiar with the newest version, and hold off until after Clannad), Ouran High School Host Club (others have suggested, I always love it), His and Her Circumstances (a bit more plain of a show), and if you're feeling adventurous give Haibane Renmei a go.

The hotdog avatar that's suggesting Bones stuff is solid on his suggestions from what I could tell. I loved Darker Than Black  and thought Xam'd was pretty neat. And will add to the Beck lovefest. I've watched it several times through and have tried to get others to watch it. Those that give it shot always love it in the end. Let's hope you're impressionable to our tastes!

If you want a little more drama heavy Monster is a longer show (74 episodes) that has a great story. Just be prepared for a measured pace to its storytelling. And yes, that means it's generally slow but if you can get hooked early on you'll enjoy the slow burn.

I want to keep suggesting stuff, hmph. The last two I'll leave you with are Planetes for a good mix of humor and drama stuff and Full Metal Panic for a sillier anime. If you get into FMP make sure to check out The Second Raid (the second season of the show) as that is better than the first season.

Hopefully you, or anyone else here, can enjoy some suggestions off of my little list linked up there. I get nothing out of it and generally it just sits there so the more people that get something out of it the better it is for me for having spent time on it. Also, I looked it over with a file on my computer that's somewhat more updated and I'm missing at least twenty shows I've watched since then, it seems. If there's any replies to this that seem to enjoy my list for what it is I'll spend a little time to format and add the newer shows I've watched and get that up.

Edit: I really hope nobody sees me linking to that as some sort of site spam. That's just my personal hosting space and that's a text document. Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to attract people to my hosting space!

@ESREVER: White people love Wayne Brady, because he makes Bryan Gumbel look like Malcolm X.

@ESREVER: I just didn't care for the characters. They were really boring and kind of cookie cutter.
