Actually, I do this a lot, and for several different squirrels near my house. Yes other animals will show up and the jays and crows don't surprise me, I get some of them too. To make sure maximum peanut to squirrel delivery is attained, I usually leave bread/dried fruit for things like jays and hide most of the peanuts in crow/raven proof nooks and crannies that squirrels can get to quite easily.
Not afraid of spiders, mostly afraid of things like wasps and hornets. Where I live, though, we have these big black beetles that hurt like fuck if they bite you, and apparently bite simply because they think you're a tree and want to lay eggs in you, which is the part that really freaks me out.
I would say get the firepower pack. The pistol and shotgun you get are both the most powerful in their respective categories and the assault rifle you get is the strongest assault rifle in the hands of your allies plus it's pretty good when you use it too.
