@jonnybob: People of a certain gender entering a space that is primarily composed of people from another gender can be problematic.
I think girls getting harassed online is not okay. But this is the nature of the medium - online multiplayer shooters are primarily played by males. If a girl enters the space and is identified as a girl, she gets treated differently (one could argue that EVERYONE gets harassed online, and horrible people employ any means to do so - being a girl just makes assholes use that for a harassment tactic, same as calling someone with a high pitched voice gay).
The same thing happens when a man enters a space that women consider their own - say a diaper changing station at an airport. There was a huge uproar in Australia, because women didn't allow men with babies to enter those rooms next to the bathroom, that are meant for ALL parents (dads and moms) to use. Now they have explicit signs that say men are allowed there.
This is a universal problem.
I very much agree, so I guess I ask why you take issue when women are allowed to speak about the biases against them? It happens in video games as we both acknowledged. So there is no reason it shouldn't be on this site. As Patrick said, he only used the statue as a jumping off point.
As a new dad, being able to change my daughter is kind of important, so the issue you mention in Australia is pretty close to my heart. When Patrick starts working at Airport bomb and writes about sexism, I'll happily support him there too.
It's a universal problem that we need to universally find a solution to, video games included.
