Hey folks, I'm interrupting the Steam monthly bonanza thing to hop on-board the cuboid MineCraft bandwagon. Now that a less sophisticated 360 version has come out - and been reviewed on GB even! In lieu of many other games! - I figured it was high time I stuck my unwarranted prejudices in my pocket and give that ol' trial version a run. You know, kind of recreating that fun everyone had with the Alpha back in the day? So I went onto UK XBLA and... they didn't have it. I guess because it takes longer to localize all that story content for Europe?
'Twas but a momentary setback for the "never say die" stalwart chap that I am, however, so I instead embarked on a quixotic quest to find something that was very similar to MineCraft - that could recreate that same mix of constructive fun and exploration wanderlust - yet was somehow both better and cheaper. Guys, I think I may have found it:
(Part 9 of May Madness is coming soon, you guys. Honest.)

He's probably not wrong, though I have to say that Shin Monshou no Nazo is quickly climbing its way to my top 5 as far as the series is concerned (and that is without me actually being able to read any of it) But also perhaps allow me to add this?
Also MinePaint is already a much more interesting game than Minecraft.
Makes sense. After all, Book 2 was always the better half of Monshou no Nazo, even if I couldn't understand it (even though for me, there was a translation patch available for the dialogue). Oh, and you are collecting the Zodiac pieces, right? Those will come in REAL handy in the inevitable Hardin face-off.
Oh shit. I still have to get through Might and Magic VII. If I remember correctly, I got up to a castle full of monsters, but still have no idea how skills & stats & shit work. You'd think my time in the Temple would have taught me a few things about D&D.
@Video_Game_King: Might and Magic isn't really D&D, though it definitely cribs from it. All you need to know is that the basic party of Knight, Thief, Cleric and Sorcerer should pretty much be set in stone for your first runthrough (though feel free to change the knight for a paladin or archer if you so please). You get skillpoints for leveling up. The amount of skillpoints it takes to increase any given skill is current rank+1, which means that to increase a skill from 1 to 2 only requires 2 points. You learn skills at the various vendors. The most useful magic skills are Air and Water magic, which at master level grant you the fly and town portal spells respectively. Bows are your friend early game.
And yeah, I already have the lightsphere and starsphere, so I got that covered.
Mento, as much as I'm enjoying your official May Madness blogs, I have to say this little bit of spring-time insanity brought me an immeasurable amount of joy. Thank you.
@dankempster: @Sparky_Buzzsaw: Thanks guys. Good to know I have a place here in case my sanity ever leaves me completely.
@Video_Game_King: @ArbitraryWater: I'm still hoping you get someone else embroiled in a MMVII blog contest. I've beaten that game twice, so I'm probably disqualified. But, yeah, it's way less complicated than D&D and ToEE. It's like a turn-based Doom almost.
