I have had a few cases myself and suffer to this day from one person who continues to hunt me down and harass me with e-mails. It's complicated because it links in with this other community I am a part of, making it impossible to completely separate myself from the person without also leaving the community, which I don't want to do. But I did make inroads to make huge distance about six months ago, because the daily abuse, the user sending me threatening messages, stalking me, trying to look up my personal information, it really left a mark on me, that to this day being reminded of it opens up closed wounds once again.

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I hope not, but sometimes the internet can be a dark place.

@sweep: You realise that millions if not tens of millions of Democrats exercise their second amendment rights too, don't you? Gun control / gun grabbing is a fairly divisive issue.

FFIX is my favorite game and I personally find this thread absolutely cringe-worthy with its casual racism.

I do find the Jack Thompson / Anita Sarkeesian comparison to be spot-on. He made the same argument that the vitriolic response to his campaign validated his position and he was just as wrong. I cannot believe Sarkeesian, a slimy con-artist who steals footage and lifts her babble from TV Tropes just to make YouTube videos, for which she was paid $150,000, is being compared to Rosa Parks. It is at this point that I start to see why there is so much hatred for certain game journalists. You can only go on spewing bullshit for so long and ignoring criticism before you ruffle the internet's feathers. That is disingenuous, though, as it's not players, the internet or men who act this way, it's human nature. Coincidentally if video game detractors - as I would hardly group together the big ones like Sarkeesian with actual enthusiasts and players - actually took into account human nature, it would explain away pretty much all of their perceived problems in the medium, but there would be far less jingoism and money involved.

Can't say I agree, seems like typical stereotyping. There's a difference between actually taking a long and hard look at what's going on to analyse what is the root problem, and simply making a judgement based on surface values. I wish we lived in a world where these prejudiced views didn't surface when and where they are convenient to your own mindset, and instead those who would be everyone else's judge would take a step back and empathize with those with whom they disagree. But alas the world went a wildly more idiotic route, and now the discourse on the outlandish, hypocritical criticism of the original discourse is what is popular to discuss. In short, where are the video games?

Just to chime in here, I think having a "sexism" forum sounds completely ridiculous. The solution, to me, is just if a thread is made that seems to be treading the same ground as another thread, lock it and direct people to an older thread about the topic. Also, it's usually pretty clear what threads are going to generate any kind of worthwhile discussion and which ones will not. Why that Anita "scandal" thread was allowed to stay open for this long is completely beyond me.

For people who don't like discussing the topics, they don't have to click. For the most part, these threads are usually labeled pretty clearly as "THIS IS ABOUT SEXISM OR WOMAN OR SOME SHIT." It's usually the same people every time who feel obligated to post about how much they don't care or just generally try to derail the conversation. I'm not saying ban them on the spot but maybe it's time to look if some people are really contributing anything positive to this site.

See, you pretty much highlighted the exact problem in those threads for me, first a person states their opinion, "THEN OUT COMES THE STRAWMAN HEHEHE." Can't you try to get your point across without using such an insulting fallacy?

@spaceinsomniac: I'd too like for moderation of shitposts, such as when the same user posts the same strawman / ad hominem in every thread of the same topic. "Oh this thread again HA LOOK AT ME IM A MRA LOLOLOL XD"

But I think that is a lost cause.

That'd be okay, I'd like mb's idea for a sexism forum that can be hidden from view, where goes all the sexiness.

Is Temkin a goon? All signs point to yes.

For clarity's sake, I mean goon in the literal sense, i.e. SA frequenter. Not a universally-known term.

OK, so you mean "goon" not in the literal sense, since if he were literally a goon he would be "a hired hoodlum or thug", "a stupid, foolish, or awkward person", or "a roughneck". The world does not revolve around Internet subcultures, though to your credit you acknowledged this. Anyway, I'm chalking this up to your own confirmation bias, unless you want to actually list off some signs that explain how Max's topic and his discussion of it have anything at all to do with SomethingAwful.

That's what the word means, yes. SA is known for making jokes about the holocaust but getting butthurt about social justice issues. So, morbid humor, meets cringing slacktivism.
