My Game of the Year Candidates for 2010

There has been so many great games this year and I have only been able to play a few but of the games i have picked up and played i consider many game of the year worthy so in this small blog i have decided to list those such games and give my personal reasons as to why i think they are candidates for my Game of the Year.

Mass Effect 2

UK 360 Box Front
UK 360 Box Front
I felt the 1st game was good, but never would i class it as a great gam but bioware really seemed to step it up with the sequal, they streamlined the needless rpg aspects of the game which turned the game into more of a shooter. The Universe was extremely fleshed out and if you so wished you could read about the World of Mass Effect for hours, its planets, ships, creatures all had their own codex's. The thing that made the whole game for me was its story, the choices you could make that would drastically change the game and its ending. I also liked the character porting from the original.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction

No Caption Provided
I have never really been a Splinter Cell fan, the whole stealth gameplay leaves me bored and i tend to find it quite tedious. The newest Splinter Cell game changed all that for me, the game had a faster pace and in parts reminded me of Arkham Asylum. Picking enemies off from the dark to arouse attention of their allies and then stealthily taking those down aswell. I also loved the execution perk aswell letting you take out up to four enemies with a singal press of a button.

Heavy Rain

Front cover of Heavy Rain (UK) for PlayStation 3
Front cover of Heavy Rain (UK) for PlayStation 3
Heavy Rain has an outstanding story, its not so much a game as an interactive story. Heavy Rain kept me entertained from start to finish with its plot twists. Its unique control system is a little strange and off putting at start but as you get used to it you become enthralled in the universe. You play as multiple characters as they try to figure out who the Oragami Killer is. You could play this game multiple times and get a different ending each time. If you die its not game over, the character you were using is no longer in the story. This is one of a few games that i have played through in one sitting and have come back too again and finished with a sperate ending. I have just started my 3rd play through of heavy rain and i am still loving this game.

Red Dead Redemption

Final Boxart
Final Boxart
Grand Theft Auto with horses thats all i need to say. This game is amazing, made by rockstar it follows the same sandbox type world as their GTA games but is set in the wild west. You play John Marsdon an ex outlaw out to capture his old allies. The game is so much fun rising around on your horse doing the story quests or the extremely entertaining side quest or just playing poker or liers dice in the local tavern.

Halo Reach

No Caption Provided
The final Halo Game by bungie, the game follows not mastercheif but noble 6 an elite group of spartans during the last days on reach. The same halo gameplay with added customisation and great multiplayer modes whats not to love. I think i completed this in 2 days and i still play he multiplayer now. The halo games are a rare class of fps and in my opinion the best on the market at the moment

These are some of my highlights from the year so far but is still have plenty more games to play, i am just getting into Fallout New Vegas and The Sims 3. I have just today bought Alan Wake and i still have plenty more to check out.

Mine? World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta and Bad Company 2. RDR and Halo are really solid too but I didn't buy RDR and got tired of Halo pretty quickly. Splinter Cell conviction was awesome but not really GOTY in my opinion.

I know my picks will be flushed away in a flood of WoW haters and CoD fanboys though.

I don't get this "candidates" thing. Are you seriously going to sit there at the end of the year and have a hard time choosing between these five games? I mean, there has certainly been a year or two when two games were released that were so close in quality, it was hard for me to choose -- but five? Really?

Mine is a toss-up between Heavy Rain and RDR. Heavy Rain's story was just so damn good.

@nutta27: It's not just you -- people are going "these are my 5-10 GOTY candidates" everywhere. It's like everyone's suddenly forgotten what the word "candidate" means.

Mass Effect 2 - it's just the game I enjoyed the most this year. Red Dead Redemption was great, too but not as breathtaking in my opinion.

@Icemael:
Candidate is an expected recipient of an award and there is no bigger reward than my personal game of the year. I tell you when i choose my favorite game they will stick it on the back of the box with all the other shite. Its something all the developers want.

I understand this list, of course, if you don't have a Wii or a PC. Otherwise, you gotta add Super Mario Galaxy 2, StarCraft 2, and Civ V.

Also, WHY HAVEN'T YOU PLAYED BAYONETTA OR VANQUISH? Also, check out Enslaved, 'cause that game is way better than the critics are giving it credit for. I guess game critics don't like Ninja Theory or something...

@Little_Socrates: I have a wii but i barely play it and sadly in the last few years i have let my specs on my pc slip, i would love to play starcraft 2. I played the bayonetta demo and i wasn't a great fan it looked a little spazzy to me and yeah vanquish looks amazing i played the demo of that too and loved it i amy take a look into buying it on pay day. My girlfriend is getting me enslaved for christmas so yeah i cant wait to check that out looks allot like uncharted and god of war mixed. I suppose i better play the new call of duty too sometime.....not really a fan of treyarch's input in the series though.

@nutta27: Barely play it or no, SMG2 will make you play it for a week or two, I guarantee. Bayonetta's demo was spazzy, but the game solved a lot of that problem.

I'm personally borrowing Black Ops from a friend, I'm bored of CoD's multiplayer.

Well I agree with Mass Effect 2 as it was a good start for 2010. Although I haven't played Heavy Rain, I hear nothing but good things about it so far so I'll be sure to check it out. In the mean time allow me to share my candidates also namely:

@VanderSEXXX: How could you be only hearing good things? The game was widely criticized for having enormous plot holes that ruined everyone's experience. Also, the writer doesn't know what romance is.

I think of your list, RDR and Mass Effect 2 will be up for GOTY. Based on everyone's opinions on the podcast I think Mass Effect 2 is the runaway GOTY on consoles. I think it's be a two way race between Mass Effect 2 and Civ 5 ultimately though. The darkhorse is Gran Tourismo 5 but I don't see a racing game winning even if it lives up to the hype.

As much as I love Civ 5, it has quite a lot of problems, even after the recent patch and a lot of people still prefer the 4th.
I don't see it as being a big contender, especially against Starcraft 2.

For me it's StarCraft II, hands down.

It's not just in the "awesome game I'll beat many times" category; it has incredible community, depth, and multiplayer people will play for years.

Years.

I consider SC II to be in a completely different league than all the other runner-ups; sure, all of these games are incredible fun to play, but StarCraft II is just an
increbile gaming phenomenon that will take very long to wear out.

I haven't played Red Dead Redemption of Fallout New Vegas yet and I suspect the latter might be my favorite when I get around to it. However, I've been trying to figure out which game represents my surprise of the year.

Game I was most surprised was actually really awesome and kind of turned out to be a sleeper-hit (for me, anyways)

 Nominees are...

Splinter Cell is weird. I don't even have enough for one of these. Stay tuned for my weird-ass GOTY things later on, I guess, where I name Harmony of Dissonance for the GBA for something.

I don't play many new games.

Not for me. I've just experienced some minor glitches and maybe 2 crashes during the 40+ hours I've spent with the game, guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I agree with you on "Singularity" (don't own a Wii @ the Silent Hill game), I just love it.

About thirty minutes ago I finished the "Black Ops" SP and even though they've got a million special effects and professional cuts (through the whole damn game), they were not even close to the storytelling of Singularity. Singularity manages to keep you focused on what's going on storywise and it's also a great shooter, it feels great and is a lot of fun from beginning to end.
