Favorite pieces of music from video games.

One of the things that I take away more than anything in video games is the music. Far too often I am not doing anything game related then I just suddenly remember a tune I've heard from games past. Games can have all the great graphics and epic stories that they want, but the music is the thing I appreciate more than anything else. This is just a list of all the songs I've heard that won't ever be leaving my head because of how much I love them.

Anyway this is my small list of tunes. Anybody else out there have a favorite piece of music that they just love?

Golden Sun had some really great music. I use to love just going to the sound test and listening to some of the pieces.

This list always seems handy:

Soundtracks to review to.

1. Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu
Is it really any surprise? There are just so many memorable tracks from this game!
2. Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
Man, does this game know how to work a piano. It knows exactly which notes to hit to make you feel whatever emotion it wants.
3. Bahamut Lagoon
Just like Fragile Dreams before it, Bahamut Lagoon's pretty good at laying down some emotional tracks.
4. Mystic Ark
How the hell did Produce make the SNES sound so good? Sometimes, it's hard to tell which track is the original, and which is the arrange. Also, crazy ass names abound. It's just a shame that my favorite track (Alone) is nowhere to be found on YouTube. Also, it sucks that the sequel dropped the crazy names for something much more boring.
5. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Not the PSP version (although I've nothing against that), but the SNES version. It's like a boisterous proto-Mystic Ark, in a sense. It's just the type of fighting spirit I could use while writing about how much I don't like Costume Quest.
6. Final Fantasy VI
Again, like Seisen no Keifu, so many memorable and beloved tracks to pick from.
7. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
OK, I mostly listened to this one while I was reviewing the game in question. It's how I figured out that half the soundtrack is ripped from Link to the Past. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy it, though.
8. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Honestly, how the crap can you question this? Michael Jackson wrote the soundtrack. He snuck Smooth Criminal into the Ice Cap Zone. That is just all kinds of awesome.
9. SaGa
(Specifically, the Romancing variant of it.) Technically, I should only list Romancing SaGa 3 here, since 1 is hard as hell to find on YouTube (hint: English won't do you any favors), and I'm pretty sure that 2 isn't even on YouTube, but they're all so good. Kenji Ito sure as shit knows how to compose stylistic music.
10. Hatsune Miku
Goddamn it. I guess that's it. I've crossed the weeaboo line. There's no going back now. I have to admit, though, that this Vocaloid can work wonders when used properly. You (I) have @icemael to blame.
11. Fire Emblem Gaiden
I'm trying to institute a new rule where for each review I write, I try to write it to a video game soundtrack I haven't already done for this. This time, we have Fire Emblem Gaiden, which manages to eke in with a decent fantasy soundtrack, ranging from energetic to just plain mystical.
12. Yoko Shimomura
Oh, Ms. Shimomura. Only your elegant, sonorous pieces could help me survive the terror of reliving Alone in the Dark for review purposes.
13. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
And following Ms. Shimomura is a soundtrack that's simultaneously bouncy and emotional. It's like Fragile Dreams Pinball, only not that fucking insane.
14. Terranigma
While I'm here, I might as well add the Terranigma soundtrack. So distinctive and soft. The sad thing is that neither of the composers for this game ever worked on anything else (as far as I can tell).

I had this all hyperlinked up then got an error, I don't have the heart to find them all again :(

ANYWAY I tried to pick 1 track from my favorite OST(s), but each of these albums rocks.

  • Terminal March-Bastion
  • Cider Time-Dustforce
  • Kinetic Harvest-Shatter
  • Moongazer-To the Moon
  • Daisuke and Miami Disco-Hotline Miami
  • The Corruption-Darksiders 2
  • Terra's Theme-Final Fantasy 6
  • Betus Blues-Super Meat Boy
  • Sacrificial-The Binding of Isaac (Danny Baranowski is a BOSS)
  • That One Song By Jeremy Soule- Guildwars and Elderscrolls

Off the top of my head, Vigil's Theme from Mass Effect and Drake's Theme from the Uncharted series are two of my favorite music pieces in games.

That's really hard to narrow down. Here goes, though:

Megaman 2Considering the hardware it ran on, this game has some amazing tracks.
DOOMThe words "E One, M One" give me a MIDI-metal boner.
BastionEven if you don't like Bastion, you've got to at least give the soundtrack some credit.
DustforceIndie Game With Mindblowing Soundtrack #1
FTLIndie Game With Mindblowing Soundtrack #2
Hotline MiamiIndie Game With Mindblowing Soundtrack #3
Every Final Fantasy but especially 6 and 8.Nobuo Uematsu is kind of a big deal.
The main theme for every Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind."That One Song By Jeremy Soule"
While I've only really watched the ERs, the P4 soundtrack.I still have no idea what the lyrics to the battle theme are.
Spec Ops: The LineI'm pro-same-sex marriage because then it's only a matter of time before I can marry a video game.
Rush 2: Extreme Racing USAWhat's yo' name?
FezI've got mixed feelings on the actual game but props to the soundtrack.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EPIn the same way Spec Ops left me dead inside at the end, I'm pretty sure S&S made me a better person
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of DemnosMy first experience with how badass wizards are.
Thirty Flights of LovingIf Chris Remo's music were a consenting woman, I would kiss it on the mouth.
Honorable Mention: Giant Bomb Un/Official Classic Trackmania server.Duh.

I try to mix it up whenever these threads come around. Lately I've been on a huge ambient kick, so here you go:

I've got some recent favourites:

GameSong
Tekken Tag Tournament 2

"Battle Cry"

This is my favourite track of TTT2. I cannot help but move to this song. It's just so catchy.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

"A Targeted Redhead"

Love it. This is the song I hear when I think Ghost Trick.

Final Fantasy XIII

"The Promise/Serah's Theme"

My mixed impressions of FFXIII caused me to leave the game unfinished. This song makes me want to give the game another shot. I may have cheated a bit by posting a cover, but I like this song in all its renditions.

Melty Blood: Actress Again: Current Code

"Obscure Zone"

Oh man, this song! It's so funky -- it sounds like something you'd hear out of CvS2.

Skullgirls

"In Just a Moment's Time"

Playing SG again has reminded me of this wonderful tune. It's the perfect ending song to the game. Definitely my favourite song of SG.

Fuck yes ^__^ Ghost Trick's soundtrack is amazing, not to mention that the game itself is also amazing.

Also, here's something from Splice:

I'm playing through Halo: Anniversary and the music is still incredible.

People can argue all they want about the direction FPS's took after Halo, use of a controller etc. but that score suits the game down to the ground and sets the atmosphere better then the graphics or story ever did.

What a beard! The rest of it is pretty cool, too.

On topic, there's a distinct lack of Chrono Trigger in this thread.

We also need some Mega Man X

Loading Video...

And a bit of Deus Ex

Loading Video...

Donkey Kong Country 2 gets a mention

And some Morrowind for good measure.

Metroid Prime's soundtrack is still great

Halo 1 has already had a mention and so has Doom, so I won't post those. I can probably think of more but I don't want my post to be too long.

I get really pumped whenever I hear the Skyrim theme and I have so many flashbacks to the countless hours I spent with that game. It single handedly hyped me for the game beforehand.

Final Fantasy 4 (Theme of Love) 6 (Terra's Theme) 7 (Aerith's Theme) 8 (Don't be Afraid) and 10 (Zanarkand)

Chrono Trigger (Brink of Time) (Wind Scene) (Memories of Green)

Persona 4 credits song (Never More). Persona 4 had pretty good music in general.

The legend of zelda - All of the music from (Ocarina of time) (Windwaker) (A link to the Past) (Skyward Sword) (Twighlight Princess)

Nothing in particular, but the pokemon games have pretty good music all around

Ni No Kuni (The Fairygrounds) - (Ding Dong Dell) - (The Golden Grove) - (The Hero of the Kingdom) Every time I hear Kokoro No Kakera( Pieces of a Broken Heart ) I get a little misty eyed.

The Dragon Quest 8 main theme is absolutely beautiful.

Symphony of the Night is another personal favorite of mine. Just hearing any song from it's soundtrack reminds me of exploring Dracula's castle like it was yesterday. The most recognizable song by most is probably Dance of Gold. It's one of the first songs you hear when starting the game and it creates a wonderful precedent for the game's tone. Also, Dance of Pales is beautifully haunting and one of my favorite videogame songs from the Ps1 era.

Finally FTL. Speaks for itself.

The music from Halo is one of the reason why I love to play that series as much as I do. That score is really incredible.

System Shock 2 has a very good soundtrack. Of course, this music is much more effective when you're trying to run away from shotgun wielding zombies.
