Phrases That Annoy Me

I could care less

We've been over this one a hundred times, but apparently it'll take a hundred and one until people figure it out.

You could care less? Does that you mean you care a lot? Well obviously you care some amount, if it's possible for you to care less. How much do you care?

What it really means
Of course, what people are trying to say is that they couldn't care less. Why they don't simply say that, I'll never know.

Sometimes people say it's sarcasm. Well, in that case, the statement is just as stupid. It's very poor sarcasm. In fact, most people inflect "care less" when saying this statement, so I don't even think that holds up. But even if the sarcastic word is "could", it's still a very poor way of expressing it. A proper sarcastic variant would be "I care a lot". Or you could, you know, just say you couldn't care less.

That's just like, your opinion, man

Every time I see someone say some variant of "that's just your opinion" I want to gargle razorblades. Who's fucking opinion do you think I'm giving?

What this really means
What they're really trying to do is belittle your opinion, but having absolutely no empirical evidence to argue against it, they attempt to minimize it's value by saying "that's just your opinion".

What a completely useless statement. It literally says nothing. Do you people who say this really want every sentence to end with an asterisk and a disclaimer saying "note: this is my opinion"? Why? This statement says literally nothing. It's a complete waste of bandwidth. You may as well quote every single person on the internet and say "well you just typed that". Wooptyshit, Sherlock.

But I guess that's just my opinion.

Have your cake and eat it, too

In this one, it's not the actual phrase that bothers me, it's people thinking they're hot shit because they realize that what's the point in having cake if you can't eat it?

What it really means
What this phrase is NOT saying is that I want to be able to eat cake. What it is saying is that I want to have cake while also being able to eat it. You can not have something that has been consumed, ergo, the phrase is saying I want to have it both ways, have the best of both worlds, etc. I want to have money but able to spend it too is an analogy. If you spend your money, you have lost that money and then do not have it. Simple. You're not clever for realizing cake is useless without being able to eat it, and the phrase wasn't suggesting anyone wants to have unedible cake.

That's it for now. What are some phrases that grind your gears? (I just set you up to say you're bothered by "grinds my gears". Roll with it.)

Well, that's just your opinion, but I could care less. Now I'm going to go have my cake and eat it too. ;)

Actually, I can't stand it when people say they could care less. The worst is when my dad says it (and he's usually pretty smart about things like that too). I've corrected him numerous times.

One I really can't stand... you just get done telling an anecdote, and the person you're talking to says, "That's ok, [insert one-up anecdote here]."   The second they say that's ok, I stop listening.  I mean, if I were telling you about when my mom died, and you say "that's ok" that means you didn't hear a fucking word I said and were just interested in getting to what you wanted to say.

There's a big difference with "nigga" and "nigger".  A very big difference. "
"Nigga" is like a variation of "nigger." There's no significant difference.

You can't say the "N-word" on this site! It's dangerouuus! Usually it's us "white folks" who says you can't use it and the black folks are like "meh whatever" ... I wonder why that is  "
The black people can say it all they want, and so can anyone else, but for a long time that word was considered an insult when said by anyone other then black people themselves, so while he may be quoting Boondock, as a reader reading that phrase out of context, all I see is bait for getting suspension. Just because a movie character says some sort of racial slur, it doesn't mean its alright to repeat it out of context.

It bugs me when people say:

"begs the question"

when what they mean is

"brings up the question"

I'm talking about THE Boondocks.

You know...The Boondocks.  The show that's been banned twice due to white people and BET claiming it's too offensive.  The top rated animated show since it's start in 2005...
...the Boondocks.   You know, the newspaper comic strip...that was turned into an animated serial.

The entire point of Boondocks is that people don't know shit.  I'm not white, and that word is used so much it's not offensive.  I made another thread asking people if it's okay if people can make fun of their own race/culture.  Within that thread, the n-word has been said at least a couple times on each page.  People don't understand context.

"Nigga you gay" is the frickin' catch phrase of one of the show's protagonist.  It's said here in both Philly and NYC regularly, and no one finds it offensive.  It's an expression, and that's the entire point of the show.

EDIT:  Have you even seen Boondocks?!

I get that, but at the same time, not every person will agree with you, and since this is a website on the internet where everyone in the world can access, it is common cutesy not to have any racial slurs/comments, even if it is being quoted. Personally in real life, I don't care, and hey maybe it's fine for you to say it on here, but I remember even Jeff deliberately not saying it so if he feels he shouldn't say it while participating in the community then I think that makes sense. Shit like this is so complicated you never know what to do in situations like this.

I think the "I could care less" one comes from its sardonic usage in "Yeah, like I could care less." I think over time, people have just truncated that phrase, but of course that screws up its meaning.

I agree with "I could care less". The worst part is that it means the polar opposite of what some people seem to think it actually means.
Any gay as pejorative statements. "That's so gay", "no homo", "that's for fags" etc...
"It could be worse", "At least it's not y" etc... Any comment that dismisses something because it's not at one absolute extremity.

I don't like 'I for one'  "I, for one, think blah blah blah."  I don't need you to define the word I.  If you removed it from your sentence it would change nothing, so it's useless.

Also, it's not a phrase but, the internet is really bad with.......... ellipsis........   Every 15 year old things they sound profound or something by tossing in exaggerated misplaced ellipsis.

Probably not. That was just the header for that section though, my issue is with any form of "that's just your opinion", not quoting The Big Lebowski. How could talking about "that's your opinion" and not make the reference?

I don't mind "Lol" or "Lolz" so much if they don't spell it, but saying "win" or "fail" is usually used in a context where those words are used so lightly, rather than an extreme, so they end up just spammed. =/

The things that annoy me aren't phrases, but just tendencies. Starting a smug retort or correction with "Um..." is one. For instance, "Um, you do know that Spider-man is hyphenated, right?"

Also, when people try to be clever by referring to a public figure as a play on his or her name. Examples include Shrub (GW Bush), Nazipolitano (Janet Napolitano), and Obummer or Maobama (Obama).

I find it extremely difficult to take people seriously when they do either of those things.

EDIT: But that's not really a phrase, so I guess "Epic Fail". I used to like it, but it's been used so much that now every fail is an Epic Fail, which means no fail is a truly Epic Fail.

"That's your opinion" or phrases with the same meaning are useful though, since there are instances where people are just rattling off completely subjective statements on things, acting like they're objective, and starting arguments over it. True, it should always be apparent that people are stating their opinions on things, but sometimes they forget that they can't actually "prove" that so-and-so game is better than some other game. It can be a good way to get everybody to calm the hell down.
