They're my fav band, so bias galore; but I'm not blinded so much that I don't recognize they're not for everyone. Actually, that's a big reason why I like them so much. I'm so in love with their brain-melting aggressive side, that I lose perspective on what i think their "tame and safe" material is. So maybe their normal shit might just be too out-there for most people as well.
Their record company is pretty rough about what gets posted onto youtube (especially over the last five years) so I'm sad to say samples are not plentiful. Here is a show from 2008 that covers most of their 2003-2008 fan favorites. A lot of people feel that seeing them live is when you finally "get it".
- In 2005 they made a pretty deliberate shift in tone. A lot of "hey, come and be crazy with us" kind of songs. They put out a UK post-punk inspired album in 2005 called Now is The Time!, and a big arena rock sized album called We Ate The Machine in 2008. When writing their 2014 album, ACTION!!!, the singer admits he was listening to a lot of Chvrches, !!!, and Passion Pit at the time, so there is a lot of catchy dance and synth-pop on that one. They're all on iTunes (and maybe spotify?).
- Or just jump into the fire, and track down a copy of Neu (2000). Basically my favorite album ever made. It is non-stop hot punk rock fire. The synth solo to XCT still gives me goosebumps after all these years,
