I'd say you're fine just playing DMC3 then 4. You can go back to 1 to see where the series started, but there's not much story in 1, and what little of it there is might actually make a little more sense after playing 3.

I hope the characters' mouths move when they talk in the HD versions...

At first, I thought Fighting is Magic would take it easily. Then Skullgirls started to take a very convincing lead, and I thought there was no way Melee could catch up. Now Melee is several thousand higher than Skullgirls and Fighting is Magic. This is craaazy. I'm happy that I'd be happy with any of these games taking the 8th game slot.
