Favorite Games

Yo, these are alright in my book. From the bottom up, in terms of preference.

One day I'll be satisfied by the composition of this list.

One day.

List items

  • This is classic SMT done right, folks. Clutch streamlining, haunting atmosphere, a rock solid soundtrack and one despicably large compendium made this a very easy decision.

  • Nocturne is ultimately what the series had been building toward at the time, and it really shows. It might only place 2nd on this list, but I'd not hesitate to call this the pinnacle of the series.

  • This game is so good. Too good to be on the same list as ToP, really.

  • This game isn't really that great! Well, I guess it's a "more than the sum of its parts" sort of thing, which is easy to forget once you've layed off for a while. Anyway, P3 introduced me to the series (do you see the pattern here), and that's pretty swell.

  • Certainly my favorite OST. Though that title would undoubtedly belong to the original DDS, were it not for its insufferable battle theme.

  • Aria introduced me to the series, and is also pretty rad. The vapid anime character designs they went with for it's sequel probably has something to do with it's exclusion.

  • Folklore manages to evoke the sort of bleak whimsy I tend to associate with Irish folklore so well that it's nearly absurd. Coupled with my most cherished of fictional settings and more then a few themes that managed to personally resonate with me and you've got a game truly after my own heart.

  • This basically introduced me to the hobby, so I figure it deserves a spot on this list.

  • A thoroughly unexceptional RPG by modern standards that nonetheless took from me countless hours of my life.

  • so good

Well. These certainly are words forming...a statement.

(I just saw this, I must have glossed over it months ago)

@Eirikr: A true statement, even. Though "insufferable" is admittedly a bit too severe. Let's just say I don't like it very much. It's just... paced really poorly? Keep in mind that I know next to nothing about music. I enjoy the remix they used in DDS 2, if that's saying anything.

But no, I often find myself changing the accompanying text on these lists every few weeks, in some orwellian fit of dissatisfaction. That one was a recent addition, I believe.

@Soren: I don't know the first thing about music theory either, but I gotta say DDS1's Hunting might be my favorite battle theme next to Nocturne's. I agree it's not a very fast-paced one, but all the different solos made grinding on Ises and Lakshmis much more interesting. DDS2 Hunting is great too. Taken together, the two games are just amazing on the audio front. Shame they don't get more attention.

And going by comments on related videos, was Vritra named Vitra in DDS2? That would still be better than Asura's Wrath's "Vlitra." Come on Capcom, Wikipedia is right there! "Revelaitons"...oh, right.

@Eirikr: Nah. I'm willing to bet "Varna" was the only major gaffe in those games (made all the more jarring by the addition of Varuni).
