If anybody was curious about the current state of the game, I thought I'd post some footage of a few games I played this week. At it's best, it's become a tactical game that's very satisfying in a way that I've never seen in a multiplayer shooter. At it's worst, you'll end up in some really boring, one-sided games.

A pretty good game-long firefight on Manus Peak. I start out with one of the newly-introduced Assault Combat Rifles (some video of the normal variant in the third video), but I spend most of the game with my favorite, the trusty space shotgun:

Point defense (with the same shotgun fitting as above) in a city. I mostly avoid the Bravo objective once it's clear that we've lost it, because it's usually a bloodbath in there. I spend some time outside Bravo though, just trying to prevent enemies from leaving. I get some pretty good grenade and pistol kills in this game:

Making the best of a game that my team starts losing pretty early on. They gave everybody some free Combat Rifles to encourage their use (they were introduced in a recent patch) and I made a cheap fitting to save ISK. This is one of my first games with this fitting, so you see me doing some weird stuff like hip-firing when I should be ADS and forgetting to reload because I'm experimenting/not quite used to the weapon yet:

No options to select PS4, XBONE, or Wii U from this pulldown. You can select another platform and then replace the platform code in the URL, though, and you'll get the right results.

I'm still playing. The new patch kind of messed up my shotgun mojo though. Speed tanking no longer seems to be viable; it's all about pure HP tanking now:/

That & shields. I just started running shotgun but I've been rocking a slower, but shield heavier (242) medium build. It's been good so far, so I guess I lucked out :)

Profile dampening also helps.

Yeah, I've always been primarily an assault shotgunner (Minmatar Assault). Before this patch I was using an enhanced kinetic catalyzer and a basic ferroscale plate in my low slots, but now that you can't dodge/evade gunfire with speed anymore, I've had to change things up a bit. Before the patch, I was running a little HP-light and just using skill/speed to mitigate damage. Now, I've tanked out my shields (at 383 shield HP on the ADV Minmatar Assault suit) and my low slots are a basic profile dampener and a cardiac regulator. The key now seems to be to avoid detection, use a scanner (or have one in your squad) and be really sneaky. With the tacnet changes they've made, a scanner has become a super useful tool to have; I use them on my SG scout, AR logi, and AR assault fits, but I can't fit one on my SG assault fit yet.

@mr_creeper: no problem. This isn't the easiest game to get into, but there's definitely something pretty compelling at the core.

After playing for a while with the mouse, I've gone back to the 125Hz polling rate. Editing my previous post accordingly.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I asked the original question and I finally figured out the answers:

I've been playing this game pretty regularly and figured out how to have fun and do well (the secret isn't expensive gear, but playing smart and being on a squad that communicates), but I still have serious issues trying to aim with any precision using the DS3 controls. For a while, I got around the suckiness of aiming by avoiding precision weapons (I got pretty good with the mass driver).

I had serious issues with sluggishness when I first tried to use a mouse, but based on watching a few videos where people were obviously using KB/M, I decided to reinvestigate. Since others stated that they had been using pretty standard, generic mice successfully, I thought that dropping the polling rate on my mouse would probably help the most. I went into the desktop software for my G9x and made a stored profile specifically for Dust 514. The most important thing I did was drop the polling rate of my mouse from 1000Hz down to 125Hz. Initially, I thought 250Hz was a better setting, but it seems to undershoot fast mouse movements when you set polling above 125Hz. I also remapped the thumb buttons to the keyboard inputs for reload/melee and the middle button to grenades. In the end, these are the settings I ended up using for pretty PC-like controls of the game:

  • 125Hz polling rate (super important)
  • 800 dpi resolution
  • 90% mouse sensitivity in the in-game configuration

The only problem I have with KB/M now is that the in-game radial menus for equipment selection and vehicle module activation are nearly impossible to use with the KB/M controls, which makes my Logi almost impossible to play. On the upside, I'm super accurate with my aim now, so I dusted off my shotgun assault loadout and have been having a ton of fun. I also started a shotgun scout alt to practice my tactics, situational awareness, and aim skills.

@brackynews: I've played around with turrets in the game, but it's not immediately obvious to me what the turret skills do. They seem to say that you need the skills to use turrets, but I have yet to find a turret (stationary or on a vehicle) that I was unable to use with my untrained character. The damage bonuses for skilling up seem pretty minor. So what's the point of training turrets?

I finally got around to playing this game (my backlog is epic). For some reason I decided to make it harder for myself and am trying to make my character stealth/unarmed focused (ie: no points in any weapons skills past what I started with). I'm only level 5 at the moment, but I've been doing ok against enemies with guns by crippling their arms from afar with a gun and then closing in for melee kills, or just sneaking up on them and punching their heads off. I've probably had the roughest time with fire ants and the super mutants with the chain guns.

Anybody else tried this before? Got any advice?

Have you messed with the overscan settings on your TV or laptop? This sounds like the sort of problem that could possibly caused by either your laptop or your TV trying to account for overscan.
