Steam for Mac: Why All the Hate?

In case you have been living under a video games related rock, and have also avoided Giantbomb's homepage, Steam for Mac has been released.

While it is  still a little buggy, many Mac users, such as myself, are now beginning to understand why Vinny is always talking about how much money he has spent on games he will probably never play on the podcast.  Those deals are too good to pass up.  For example, the Indie Games Pack with World of Goo, Machinarium, Galcon Fusion, Osmos, and And Yet It Moves, for $20.  World of Goo alone is probably worth that, plus the quick look of Machinarium made it look highly worthwhile.  And then it turns out Galcon Fusion is a clone of my favorite flash strategy game.

Additionally, Portal is free. The game that everyone on the internet shares inside jokes about that I don't get, FOR FREE! And of course Torchlight is half off this weekend too.

So $40 and 7 games later, I am officially a Steam junkie.  And yet, of course there is so much pure HATE with this announcement.

I jumped onto my Twitter account (@spencerm1 for those so inclined) and threw something up about Steam for Mac.  Right away I got replies like "30 years behind PC" or "Wow, so now Mac has 10 of the 100's of games on PC" and, (this actually made me laugh) "lolmac."  Then I had a problem downloading Portal (it seems the price of free caused everyone with a Mac to download it at once, it has since downloaded) so I headed to the Forums, where the internet hate machine was on full power.

I've been around games and the internet for plenty of time, and have lived through my share of system wars.  I know most of it is illogical.  And yet, some of it is incomprehensible.  PC gamers, you still have the most options, the best games, the most well supported home computer gaming system.  Yes, those of us with Macs are still living in the dark ages.  Do you know how long it took me to purchase Sim City 4 this year? Best Buy, Gamestop, Wal-mart, Target, none of them carry Mac games, I had to order it direct from the Apple Store... So yes, I am so excited that Steam for Mac is available.  But why do you care? Seriously, why? No PC gamer lost anything by Steam opening up to Mac, if anything you are gaining new players into the online community.  If TF2 ever comes to Mac, think about how many more people that will be to play against.  Maybe developers will continue to support computer hardware, seeing as how successful Steam's sales numbers are.  If anyone reads this, and can give me one good reason why a PC steam user should be upset about Steam coming to Mac, I will give you an internet cookie, or something.
