Loved this game.

The house really felt lived in and the atmosphere was first rate. I went in thinking that the supernatural undertones were PROBABLY just for flavor, but the game had me second-guessing myself a couple times. (mostly in that first secret passage with the papers all over the walls, the crucifix, and the popping lightbulb)

I also appreciated that the characters never seemed to fall TOO far into the stereotypical roles that they represented. I felt even the parents didn't slip into the "oh no my child's a homosexual" cliche completely. The note you find from them after they find out about Sam and Lonnie says that Sam can't lock her door when Lonnie is over, but they never forbid Sam from seeing her or anything like that.

I spent the last half of the game praying that I wouldn't find Sam dead in the attic since it's just the type of ending games like this seem to go for. So I was pleasantly surprised and immensely relieved when it ended on a note that gave you hope for the family's future.

Was it revolutionary?

Eh, I wouldn't be the one to ask. I just know that I loved this game.

I don't know about the villain, but can I get a different hero?

I'm not happy with the one I was given, I'd like to exchange him.

Beetlejuice

Nightmare Before Christmas

Murder By Death

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Not sure if they count, but I'd also add any MST3K episode. And I think ParaNorman is gonna end up on the list eventually. Haven't gotten tired of it yet.

With created characters I usually end up making both, though if there's more than a gender choice (i.e. classes or factions), I probably end having more female characters.

I generally don't project myself into games; instead I come up with a character as though I'm writing a story. Therefore my gender doesn't really matter to the character in the game.

As for why I might choose to make more females than males.....

Well, as someone said earlier, there are already a ton of male protagonists in games, so females ones just seem more interesting by default. A male gang boss in Saints Row: the Third is pretty standard, but a female one seems more novel.

Maybe that's just me being vaguely sexist, but that's the reason so..... eh

I went through all of them when I first came across GB, which is probably a little over a year ago. I actually just started going through them again a couple months ago and am still enjoying them.

Of course, I work as a janitor so I have a lot of time to listen.

I heard the outcry about the ending before I finished the game. I didn't have it spoiled or anything, but I heard that people were really upset with it. So maybe my expectations were lowered before-hand or something, but when I got to the end my reaction was more like, "eh, that's not bad".

It wasn't the ending I would've written, but I was satisfied with it. The extended cut was fine with me too since what it clarified was pretty much just what I'd assumed on my own. Overall I was just kinda 'meh' to the whole mess. The internet being the internet, thoughtful and meaningful discussions were quickly drowned out by people who liked the ending calling others whiners and people who hated the ending screaming about "betrayal".

But then, I really liked Dragon Age 2, so maybe I'm just wacky. : )

Also, keep in mind that even if they are acting like normal 20-something "bros"; for a lot of older gamers (and sadly even some younger ones still) normal 20-something bros were often the enemy. The popular types who did things like big parties and Spring Break were often the types who looked down on and laughed at the gamers and "nerds".

So maybe some of the dislike comes from seeing them partying it up and stuff and recognizing it as the behavior of former tormentors.

Just a thought.

Well, I can't speak for other people, but as far as the GB crew goes..... well, overstating stuff is kinda their schtick.

Watch the Quick Look of Nights for an example of what I'm talking about. Do I think that Jeff hates that game THAT much? No. It's hyperbole, partly for emphasis and partly for comedy. I suppose they could be fair, balanced, and completely literal, but I'm not sure how funny that would be.
