Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

First, a few caveats about this list. I avoided any games that I have not had time to finish. That means Far Cry 4 and Captain Toad: Treasure tracker have been left off the list.

I also have not included games that released on new platforms this year if they were previously released on PC/another console. This is a personal rule to prevent me from making Spelunky my Game of the Year every time it gets re-released. Unfortunately that prevents Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn from being included on this year’s list. Square Enix deserves a lot of credit for looking at the disastrous launch of FFXIV and having the integrity to admit they messed up and try again. A Realm Reborn is a wonderful timesink of an MMO and one of the few that has an engaging, well produced storyline.

Finally, I can’t include games that I wanted to get to but haven’t yet played. Games like JazzPunk, Divinity: Original Sin, and Hearthstone are all worthy of discussion but until I actually play them I can’t engage in that discussion.

List items

  • Sunset Overdrive is a colorful, funny, expansive adventure with superb traversal, inventive weapons, and fantastic mission variety. Just about every aspect of the game works hand-in-hand with the others to create what I believe to be Insomniac’s best game to date. I enjoyed every single minute of the game and I can’t wait to play more whether it’s in DLC or sequel form. Simply put, no other game in 2014 was as fun as Sunset Overdrive.

  • Inquisition was everything I wanted out of a new Dragon Age game and more. The combat may not have reached the deep level set by Dragon Age: Origins but after the misstep that was Dragon Age 2 Bioware staged a spectacular comeback. I could easily spend another 50 hours on top of the 70 I devoted to this world if that meant more of the endearing characters (especially my adventuring party of Varric, Iron Bull, and Dorian) and the well constructed political/sociological universe.

  • Is Destiny one of the best games of 2014 or the most disappointing? Can it be both somehow? All I know is that I have played this game almost daily since it launched 3 months ago. Only Final Fantasy XIV, a full-blown MMO, has consumed more of my time this year. Recent changes to Destiny’s end-game grind has improved much of what bothered me and the core experience still provides the best shooting out of any game released in 2014. Bungie has a 10-year plan outlined for Destiny and for better or worse I’m going along for the ride.

  • I was running towards a side-mission when Zog-Dush the Bone Crusher spotted me. We locked eyes across the field and he just chattered his teeth at me. “Zog-Dush, I don’t have time for your shit,” I said as I ran away. A few hours later I was fighting another Uruk captain and a dozen other enemies and losing. I countered an attack and there he was again, Zog-Dush. I was already and in poor condition and just couldn’t fight back. Zog-Dush dealt the final blow and was promoted to Warchief. Eliminating him became my only goal and Shadow of Mordor cemented itself as one of my favorite games of the year.

  • Playing Bayonetta 2 is experiencing moment after moment where you think it can’t keep getting anymore “out there” but then you’re surfing inside a giant waterspout while a huge monster throws churches at you.

  • Do not mention 2048 to me. That imitator pales in comparison to the true puzzle game of the year, Threes. Adorable and addictive, Threes is the perfect phone game and is the first mobile title to make me really respect the platform. It can (and has been) done on other platforms but there’s nothing like a quick swipe of the finger to combine the tiny number monsters of Threes.

  • Best tagline of the year (“Loving Father. Caring Husband. Secret Octopus”).

    Best theme song of year.

Best totally normal guy simulator of the year.

  • I was done with Call of Duty after Ghosts and based on the sales of Advanced Warfare many others were as well. After seeing the changes Sledgehammer planned for the series (along with the fact that Sledgehammer is made of many former Dead Space developers) I was apprehensive excited for this year’s game. Advanced Warfare ended up being the best Call of Duty since Black Ops and a welcome update to the series’ stagnate playbook. Great player mobility and some unexpected gameplay ideas made the campaign exciting and refreshed the multiplayer enough to get me back into the series.

  • 2014 will be remembered as the year first-person shooters took a much needed step forward in terms of mobility. Titanfall kicked this trend off in spectacular fashion and made me miss wall-running and double-jumping every time I went and played another shooter. I look forward to the inevitable sequel where we may get an actual campaign mode to go along with the fast-paced multiplayer.

  • A great central mystery and unique cast made The Wolf Among Us feel both distinct from, and an evolution of The Walking Dead: Season 1. The game doesn’t reach the highs bar set by The Walking Dead but what it does offer is more than worth experiencing.
