Ben saying "DMC it up" is exactly what I think of when I think about the combat of FF7, so much nostalgia for the DMC-style combat of the PS1 classic Final Fantasy 7

Exactly. Seeing the actual combat for the first time now, made me lose any interest in this game. I was kind of sad when they dropped the turn based style, but in the demo it seemed like it was turned into a fun action game, and the rest of the team also actually helped out when you were not in direct control making them feel like actual team mates instead of puppets just waiting to be told what to do. But now it seems they are pretty much useless when you are not telling them what to do or controlling them. And adding to that it's turned in to some hyper fast action game you need fast reflexes for, pattern recognition, stagger systems,.... making things as hard as possible instead of fun. Maybe they should have gone all the way and added complicated combos, air moves and a fucking score system after each battle. And the only other option is to play it in baby-mode without any challenge whatsoever. What's wrong with making a game fun AND challenging?

I like Dark Souls games, I like playing DOOM on Ultra Violence, I don't mind games giving me a hard time, when they are games that revolve around gameplay. FF revolves around story, characters and spectacular combat (with summons you could actually use!). Not about making it hard just for the heck of it. For me this system makes about as much sense as turning it into an FPS.

I usually don't mind if a game is "not my thing", cause there are plenty of other games that I like. But I'll make an exception for this remake. I hope it does poorly so they reevaluate the combat system completely for the next games. Maybe I'll give it a shot when it's out on PC and someone mods the combat to be fun.

Just another opinion, cause feedback can always help.

I disliked both this years format and GOTY content. There were 2 actual videos, both of which were still fun, but there were only two... The smaller whimsical top X videos by the staff were fun, but should have been a cherry on top of a cake; this years video content seems more cherry than cake.

Talking about more games to prevent the "I just wanted to have this game mentioned!" during the category talks seems like a nice idea, but to me it seems this took a lot less time last year? Just rambling of a list of almost every noticeable game release of 2019 seems like a waste of time. So many titles got nothing more than a "meh" response either because it was "not bad, but not good either", barely anyone played it, or it was just the boring kind of bad. Perhaps limiting he list to actual suggestions by the crew, so at least someone has something to say about it that they like?

There did seem to be a lot less "hostility" during some discussions, but I feel that last year it was mostly Dan who went full out on his hate against RDR2, more than anything else. If Dan had his luck with Outer Wilds switched with Jeff, this year would have been quite similar to last year. Having a discussion that is mostly about celebrating good games, instead of attacking ones you dislike, is far easier to listen to obviously. So in that regard it's an improvement over last year.

I don't know why they dropped some of the other, quite popular GOTY categories. If it was to save time due to 3 days spent just talking about every game, it seems like a bad deal to me. I know the "Biggest disappointment" discussion bummed out a lot of people because it got really vicious, but that seemed like a one off thing due to Dan & RDR2 again.

So my TLDR wishlist for next year: more lighthearted & fun video content, only talk about games that are in some way interesting to talk about, more categories.

And to everyone who got to this part, enjoy 2020!

Jeff's recounting of his experience with Outer Wilds sounds so bogus that I was almost laughing all the way through.

I had pretty much the exact same experience as Jeff (including that I had no problem with the controls), apart from the fact that I do remember the translation tool and the board. I believe you need a certain amount of luck in this game to get you going. It should have been a game up my alley, I tend to like exploring open world games, looking at every small thing I can find, wandering around,... But apart from the first guy they tell you to find, I also just went to each planet exploring, assuming I would stumble upon something that would help me along, but that never happened before the loop restarted.

To me it sounds bogus that people say there is so much to see/do that you don't know what to do first. To me almost every planet seemed barren as hell. I'm almost convinced my game was somehow broken because people keep saying there are millions of things to do in theirs. The whole "you just need to be patient and explore!" attacks are complete bullshit. I've been playing games for about as long as Jeff, and the both of us had an active interest in trying to find the fun in this game. If people fail at that, it might just be the games fault, not the person playing it. Perhaps there is only a 5% chance that someone does not find anything interesting to help them after playing it for several hours, but that's still bad design. Pure random luck should not determine if you are able to properly play a game.

I found some stuff to translate, but it seemed very random. I understand that the idea is that you puzzle all this information together, so I didn't even mind that the text made no sense. Other planets just got me killed very quickly, so I assumed I shouldn't yet be there. At some point I somehow teleported to some sort of space station with weird gravity, and I think there was some puzzle I was supposed to solve to get out, which I couldn't (because I'm dumb or just because I still had not learned anything about puzzles in the game?). From what I heard on the podcasts, I assume that's an "endgame" thing and it's not abnormal that I couldn't figure it out. I've heard people say how cool it is that you can find the end of the game by sheer luck, but actually being in that situation just fucking sucks.

So yes, Jeff is definitely not alone in his thinking, and if some more of the staff had the same amount of bad luck he and I had, it would have at least been a more interesting discussion.

I never expected Dan to be around GB forever. He seems to have an expiration date, after which an audience will grow tired of his persona. But he definitely was not at his expiration date at GB, seeing as plenty of people still liked all of what he did.

For me, most of the content content he came up with was pretty bad (making people play a bad game like Sunshine, does not make it any less bad a game to play or watch). I hated the Dan that often refused to learn or understand anything that did not fit his way of thinking. I struggled when he assumed his luck applied to others and that "things just work out" all of the time for everyone. I hated it when he did his wrestling heel bullshit: pretending to be an asshole/idiot to keep people entertained by annoying others, is dumb in my book anyway you play it.

I loved his completely insane stories. I loved it when he genuinely opened up to new information and tried to learn something. He might not provide the most insightful views into anything, but he always made people laugh, and when he was not faking being a dick, he seems like a great guy to hang out or work with.

Despite not being my favourite person on here (although sometimes he definitely was), I think he will be missed. I hope working at WWE does not turn out to be a huge disappointment to him. If you believe (even some of) the stories about WWE as an employer, that corporation seems to be run by some of the biggest unethical assholes in the world. I don't know if they will agree with the volatility he brings along with him, and I don't know if he has it in him to restrain his personality to something a pretty evil business will allow. But if it doesn't work out (but since it's Dan, it will somehow magically work), he's more than welcome back as far as I'm concerned.

I think I would really enjoy running around in the world, doing the boring delivery quests, making my way across the terrain etc, while listening to a podcast or watching some show on another screen. Like how many people play something like Truck Simulator or grind Diablo.

But from what I've seen the combat is just a frustrating mess, both against the mules and the spooky enemies. Add to that the fact that the story seems garbage even by Kojima's standards, and I don't see me putting up with the bullshit. I enjoyed MGS V because the actual gameplay was fun and you could just ignore all the Kojima stuff. In this game, the nonsense seems quite unavoidable.

Let's hope the PC version has some mods to remove the combat and story, and just lets you explore the world.

I'm really getting annoyed by this latest trend of not showing the footage the crew is looking at. The Noita segment is another horrible example of this. They are talking about what they see, but we don't get to see it. Then there is a slight fade-in, followed by "fuck you, you don't get to see this!".

I know it's supposed to be unprofessional, but having the audience miss out on something is just stupid.

Oh no, very pixelated naked ladies! Let's censor them before absolutely no one gets hurt by them! There are plenty of reasons to hate a sexist and very bad game, but because it shows breasts is not one of those.

Actually, anyone who does have a problem with a few blurry breasts, please explain to me why, because I truly don't understand it.

There's literally nowhere else to get boobies on the internet except UPF.

That's why it's so bizarre to have someone go out of their way to censor them.
