What Minecraft Needs

Okay guys, so... after playing Minecraft for a while, I've come to the conclusion, that once you get diamond, and make your diamond pick, and other diamond tools, there's not much else to the game except building creations.

Which is fine, I really do enjoy building cool stuff, but I think I'd like it if Minecraft just went a little deeper into it's resources and gave us more things to create.

Think about it this way... what if you could take two workbenches, put them next to each other, and create a large workbench?
This large workbench could have double the grid of a normal workbench, and it'd allow you to craft a whole bunch of new stuff.

What if Notch added copper to the world, then you;d get copper, combine it with iron, and create steel, which would be stronger, and more efficient.

What if you could eventually work your way up, and get modern technology, except all set in the minecraft world.  Lightbulbs powered by redstone, cars, guns.
You could even have stuff in the middle there, which was all industrial revolution technology, steam powered engines, better, more efficient  furnaces.  Really, the sky's the limit.

However, I don't think Notch is gonna add any of this to the game, so in that regard, I'm just gonna keep logging in and I'm gonna keep building stuff for no real reason.  Not because I feel I have to, but because I still find building stuff to be extremely fun.

You do know there is like 2-3 people working on the game. One of them being an artist right?

There are tons of mods however..why not check those out.

Minecraft needs structure, right now it's just a pointless neat little toy, it needs objectives, reasons to explore, at least some back story , anything.

I do realize it's Indie, I actually thought Notch was the only one working on it, besides the guy who did the music.
I still think he could add more stuff like this to it, but I also think he won't based on what I've read in his blog.  I mean, if he's hesitant to put in Lanterns... I doubt he'd put in any sort of modern technology.

And using mods would be great, but I'm heavily invested in the multiplayer scene... and setting up my own server, probably not gonna happen.

I'd say it's doing fine without a structure. It has the guts to be a true sandbox game, make your own adventure. More reasons to explore would be nice.

Personally, the only thing I'd desperately need in minecraft is a bloody repair bench!

To patch up my diamond pickaxe with one diamond or maybe even some iron would be golden.. wait!

if minecraft is good at anything it's stimulating the imagination...which is why whenever people play it the first thing they think of is how to give it actual structure.
i think the single player should play out much like Animal Crossing. live in a randomly generated town, do simple fetch quests for other villagers and then expand the story to a long journey across the virtual landscape.

After having gotten all the different equipment, built with all you can build and also having made tons of buildings and creations I find myself fed up with the game.
I kind of like that its totally non-linear and that there's no real goal, but at the same time I hate it.
I do see a lot of potential in this game and I hope it will advance in the coming months, I might pick it up again if so :)

As long as the infrastructure is there for people to add their own structure and objectives and stuff, that would be enough for me. It seems like it's getting there.

The shaking off water animation is neat.

And I believe theres a hard limit on how many items Notch can create in the game's current state, Notch can only make like 40 more block types and so many tools, which is alot, but once you start creating block types and uses for them the combinations tend to grow exponentially.

Also, if you want steel, Iron and Carbon (Coal) are already in the game. So it wouldn't be too much of a jump.

iron and copper don't make steel but i like the idea of making alloys, that would be cool
i tried a bunch of ways to combine iron and coal to get steel and was kinda disappointed it didn't work.

He's not selling the beta, he's selling the full game while it's in beta. It's up to you to decide whether it is wise to pay for a game while it's still in development.

This.  I've only played it for a week or so and I knew going in the game is just a huge sandbox.  If that's your thing great; if not, no one's forcing you to buy it.  Like others have said, you paid for the game in advance and it's still in beta.

I tell you what does excuse a lack of features: the fact that it was all just notch to start off with.

This. I think there are plans to add support for player-made adventure maps and such. Or were they called challenge maps? Minecraft is very much about making your own game. Don't be arbitrarily insisting on features that don't even make any sense within the context of the game.

Just because It's in beta or Indie doesn't mean people shouldn't post Ideas that they would like to see implemented. Notch is always looking for good ideas from the people that play the game. A lot of stuff that he's added has been things people have asked for. Not every idea is one worth adding but it can't hurt to ask.

Personally, the only thing I really want right now is the ability to add on to the boat and create your own custom ship. It may be a little weird if you were trying to sail a giant boat around in the smaller bodies of water but I think you could make it work if you made sure there were certain limitations.

Yeah I've gone off minecraft mostly because I've been playing multiplayer and everyone was spawning and I was the only one wanting to play legit. I do think There should be some kind of future structure. maybe bosses that open portals to an other world, NPCs maybe...

For some reason I build alot of castles. Its lacking catapults.
Could be cool for multiplayer. Build castles. Build catapults. Destroy each other. It would add some thinking to building a castle. How to build in order to withstand a barrage of tnt.

You could also make a Monty Pythons Holy Grail re-enactment by firing cows on intruders.

This.

also, 1.5 now has achievements, cool stuff.  Even cooler, they have Statistics.  The stats would be cooler if they were retroactive, but I'd imagine that'd be pretty hard to do.  however, now it's easier to set goals for yourself by tracking it on the statistics.

I love "What Minecraft Needs" posts/blogs/tweets. This game has sold 2 million copies, and it's not even finished yet. For every one person who tries to offer sideline suggestions, there are 100 people who are just content to wait and see where it goes next.

Personally, I've bought 9 copies of Minecraft for myself and as gifts to friends and family, and they all love it just the way it is right now. It's calming, it's stressful, it's hideous up close, it's beautiful at a distance, and it's huge, so huge you can easily get lost and have to start over somewhere else only to randomly find your previous home months later when you're out exploring.  It's boring after awhile, but then it keeps pulling you back in when you see the icon sitting there.

Notch has said he has a plan, hopefully it's not the Lost "plan", where everybody ends up dead in a church.
