Built a new PC. Added a water cooler. It is apparently beyond overkill.

My top 16 SNES games (NA release only)

My top 16 SNES games, listed in order of retrospective fondness.

List items

  • Once my favorite game of all time, it has slowly moved down the list but still clings on in the Top 5.

As a die-hard Final Fantasy fan, the 3rd American console release blew all my expectations out of the water. Better graphics, better gameplay, better story, and one of the most memorable casts of characters in video games. The moment I finally beat it is still ingrained in my memory.

  • For many people Ocarina of Time is their definitive Legend of Zelda experience. This one is mine.

  • If this list was based on pure nostalgia, this game would be #1. It was one of the games I received with the SNES, and a sequel to my all-time favorite NES game. Sure, the story is nothing amazing, but to my 9 year old self it seemed like a sprawling epic full of nuance and tragedy. It still counts as my favorite video game soundtrack of all time.

  • This had to be the biggest SNES game packaging I've ever seen. A good story in a unique setting and a bizarre sense of humor is why this game sticks out in my memory. That, and the final boss was a fetus.

  • A mixture of Zelda and Final Fantasy. (Okay, not really. Shut up.) What's not to like?

  • The only game on this list I didn't play in the first half of the 90s. Finally got around to this game 20 years after its release.

Occasionally I wish I checked out something (often highly recommended) way before I did. This is one of those times.

  • Some games become insanely popular that I end up enjoying but not falling in love with. A great game for its time, and the game I recommend for anyone wanting to play their first JRPG, but nothing about it particularly blew my mind. I'm really not sure why.

  • Damn, there are a lot of versions of this game. I played a lot of fighting games on the SNES, from crappy to great, but I probably spent the most time with the original game. Or this version. Whatever.

  • Do I need to explain this one? I don't think I do.

  • This game has not aged well at all, but I remember playing this game 4-6 hours a day for an entire summer whenever my friends or family didn't drag me out of the house. I built absolute metropolises. Such are the joys of misspent youth.

  • This hit so late in the console cycle that I already had a Nintendo 64. Goldeneye and a solid year of multiplayer madness were still a couple months away, so this became my quiet little retreat after summer practice.

  • Just thinking about this game I can hear the sound of X charging up his arm cannon. An improvement on the NES games in almost every way, except for adding animal themes to the bosses. I don't care who you are, Octopus Man is cooler than Launch Octopus.

  • The SNES was a machine that really got pushed to its limits technologically, with Star Fox being the game to really lead the way. For all those that wanted to simulate space dog, er... Fox fighting with the joys of some great gameplay, Star Fox was were it was at.

  • If you were playing games in the early '90s, Mortal Kombat was cool. Unlike the first SNES game, this one had the gore, and unlike the third game, this one didn't replace ninjas with robots or add a run button.

  • There's something about building up character concepts in video games that draws me in. Make it about animal evolution and add good gameplay and I'll keep coming back. The final evolution being mankind is still lame, though.

  • One of the great launch titles to come out with the SNES, and the first console racer to really compare to some of the arcade games. Others seemed to really like Super Mario Kart later on, but if you wanted real racing without the slot machine odds of winning, you had to go with F-Zero.
